Clauses and Sentences.

misused. Distinguishing their function is significant in constructing
appropriate and meaningful compositions.

What is It

Phrases, Clauses and Sentences are fundamental units of language.


They provide structure and meaning to almost all the languages. Phrases and
clauses are the building blocks of sentences.

Determining phrases, clauses and sentences is important in the


efficacy on the use of English language. Let us study the different examples
below.

• Prepositional Phrase
• Verb Phrase
• Noun Phrase
Clauses
• Main or Independent Clause
• Subordinate or Dependent Clause

Sentences
• Simple Sentence
• Compound Sentence
• Complex Sentence

Generally, you have to be familiar with the different types of phrases,


clauses and sentences so that you can easily spot them once you are given a
reading selection or group of sentences.

Now let us proceed to the discussion of each fundamental unit of a


sentence.

Phrases
These are groups of words that act as a part of speech but
cannot stand alone as a sentence. It functions as a single unit and it
does not have a subject and a verb.

Types of Phrases:

• Prepositional Phrase- This group of words begin with a


preposition. The preposition precedes a noun or a pronoun or a
word that acts as a noun or a pronoun.

• Noun Phrase- A noun or a pronoun and its modifiers make up a


noun phrase. This phrase acts as a noun in a sentence.

Common Nouns- a general name for person, place, animal, thing or events
Examples: teacher, school, dog, table
Proper Nouns- the specific name of a person, place, events, days of the week

• Verb Phrase- This contains a main verb and one or more helping
verb. These two have a link that connects them together. It defines
various times of the action in a sentence.

Clauses
These are groups of words that have a subject and a predicate.
It can form part of a sentence or a complete simple sentence.

Types of Clauses:

• Main or Independent Clause- Includes a subject and a verb and


expresses a complete thought. Main clauses are the same as
simple sentences because they make sense on their own.

• Subordinate or Dependent Clause- It contains a subject and a


verb, but it does not make sense on its own.

Sentences
A unit of written language that contains a subject (a noun or a
pronoun) and a predicate (verb or verb phrase). It makes complete
sense on its own. It must begin with a capital letter and end with a
period, exclamation point or a question mark.
Types of Sentences According to Structure:

• Simple Sentence- It has a subject and a verb and must express


a complete thought. It is the same as the main (independent)
clause.

• Compound Sentence- This is made up of two or more main


(independent) clauses but no subordinate (dependent) clauses.
