ECE 2304 Hydraulics I CAT 2 Time allowed 90 Minutes

1. A trapezoidal channel is carries 100 m3 /s at a depth of 5 m. If the channel has a bottom width of 5 m and 1:1 side slope,
determine (i) the flow classification (subcritical, critical, or supercritical) (ii) The specific energy of flow (iii) the total
energy head if the water surface is 50 m above the energy datum (horizontal reference line or datum). (3 Marks)
2. At a certain location, the depth of flow in a 10 m wide rectangular channel is 0.73 m. The channel discharge is 16 m 3 /s,
the bottom slope is 0.001, and Manning’s n is 0.015. (i) Determine the type of channel slope (Mild, steep etc) and flow
classification (M-1, S-2, etc.) and explain your supporting logic. (ii) determine the critical depth and critical slope (iii)
Will the depth increase or decrease going upstream? (iv) Using the direct step method (one step), determine the depth of
flow 12 m upstream. (4 Marks)
3. A vertical sluice gate with an opening of 0.60 m produces a downstream jet with a depth of 0.32 m when installed in a
long rectangular channel, 6.0 m wide, conveying a steady discharge of 28 m3 /s. It is assumed that the flow downstream of
the gate eventually returns to a uniform flow depth of 3.2 m. (i) draw the schematic diagram (ii) verify that a hydraulic
jump occurs. (iii) determine the initial sequent depth (before the jump) (iv) determine the energy-head loss in the jump.
(v) If the energy-head loss through the gate is neglected, calculate the depth upstream of the gate. (5 Marks)
4. A 1:10 model is to be constructed of a rectangular prototype concrete open channel which has discharge, Q= 16 m 3/s,
width, B = 4 m, flow depth y=2.0 m, and Manning’s n=0.013. For the model, determine (i) the depth and width (ii) the
discharge and (iii) Manning’s n. (3 Marks)
