Week 5: Quantitative Research-Data Analysis

Please read the instructions carefully and answer the following questions.

Question 1.

What is the relationship between the variables in the following graphs.

Question 2.
What is the number and % of females and males in the following sample?

Question 3.

How many children have parents who are separated?

Question 4.

What is the mean (SD) for each of height and weight?

Question 5.

Is the Kaufman score approximately normally distributed?

Question 6.

What is the standard deviation (SD) of the Kaufman score?

Question 7.

From the following scatterplot, what is the relationship between height and
head circumference?
Question 8.

Create a data file (in SPSS or Excel) that contains the following variables and values:

 VAR1: 3 5 7 6 2 1 4 5 9 5
 VAR2: 9 8 7 6 2 3 3 4 3 2
 VAR3: 10 4 3 5 6 5 4 5 2 9

a. Compute: the mean, standard deviation, and variance for each variable.
b. Create a scatterplot of var1 by var2 and include the regression line.

Question 9.

In an experiment, 10 participants were given a test of mental performance in stressful

situations. Their scores were 2, 2, 4, 3, 0, 2, 7, 5, 8, and 3. Ten other participants were given
the same test after they had been trained in stress-reducing techniques. Their scores were 4,
4, 6, 0, 6, 5, 2, 3, 6, and 4. Do the appropriate t test to determine if the group that had been
trained had different mental performance scores than the group that had not been trained in
stress reduction techniques. What do these results mean? Write your findings in APA format.
Question 10.

A researcher is examining the relationship between stress levels and performance on a test of
cognitive performance. She hypothesizes that stress levels lead to increase in performance to a
point, and then increased stress decreases performance. She tests ten participants, who have
the following levels of stress: 10.94, 12.76, 7.62, 8.17, 7.83, 12.22, 9.23, 11.17, 11.88, and 8.18.
When she tests their levels of mental performance, she finds the following cognitive
performance scores (listed in the same participant order as above): 5.24, 4.64, 4.68, 5.04, 4.17,
6.20, 4.54, 6.55, 5.79, and 3.17.

a. Name the Independent variable (IV) and the Dependent variable (DV).

b. Choose and perform the most suitable analysis to test the above hypothesis.

c. Create a graph to demonstrate the relationship between the two variables.

d. Report and explain the results.

Question 11.

The same researcher tests ten more participants, who have the following levels of stress: 16,
20, 14, 21, 23, 19, 14, 20, 17, and 10. Their cognitive performance scores are (listed in the
same participant order). Coincidentally, these participants have the same cognitive
performance scores as the participants in question 4.

a. Perform a linear regression to examine the relationship between these variables.

b. What do these results suggest?

Question 12.

Create a scatterplot of the variables in Question 11. How do results suggest that
linear regression might not be the best analysis to perform?

Question 13.

Describe the steps to be followed in SPSS to run a correlational analysis with 4

normally distributed variables.
Question 14.

Describe the steps to be followed to select specific observations from your sample (e.g.
Select from variable stress only values that are lower than 20).

Question 15.

The following SPSS output shows the results from a correlation test between ADD score in
elementary school, IQ score, Grade point average in 9th grade and Grade in ninth grade English.

a. Which variables are correlated?

b. What is the strength and direction of the relationship?

Question 16.

Here are the quiz scores for 6 students on each of three pop quizzes:
a. Create three separate scatterplots: Quiz 1 and Quiz 2, Quiz 1 and Quiz 3, and Quiz 2 and Quiz
3 b. Describe the direction and apparent strength of the relationship in each scatterplot.
Comment on the effect of outliers, if any.
