ESSENTIAL : Observe the safety and cleanliness recommendations .

1. Tooling
tool Reference Designation
[0132-AA] Camshaft locking tool

[0196.B] Crankshaft seal fitting mandrel (timing side)

2. Removing
Lift and support the vehicle with front wheels suspended.
Disconnect the battery negative terminal.
Drain the engine oil.
Drain the gearbox oil.
Drain the cooling system.
Remove the auxiliary equipment drive belt.
Remove the sump .
Remove the drive shafts.
Remove the power unit assembly.
Move aside the coolant pump spring clip.
Remove the alternator .
Remove the bolt and the dipstick guide tube.

Remove the dipstick guide tube O-ring.


Disconnect the camshaft position sensor.
Remove the bolt and the crankshaft position sensor.

Remove the 13 bolts and the 2 nuts in the order indicated.


Remove the cylinder head cover with its gasket.
Remove the cylinder head cover gasket.
Remove the 3 bolts, the oil filter support and its seal.

Remove the 5 bolts, the coolant pump and its seal.


Turn the crankshaft pulley clockwise to align the setting mark "a" on the toothed wheel (0 degrees) with those on the timing cover.
Ensure that the setting mark "a" on the camshaft pulley is at the top as indicated.

N.B. : If it is not, turn the crankshaft pulley through 1 complete revolution (360 degrees) to bring the setting mark to the top.

Immobilise the crankshaft pulley using the tool [0132.AA] and remove it.
Remove timing belt cover .
Turn the chain tensioner stop plate clockwise and compress the piston.

Insert a pin in the opening in the stop plate to immobilise the tensioner with the plunger piston in the compressed position.
Remove the 2 bolts and the chain tensioner.
Remove the bolt, the chain tensioner slide and the timing chain.
Remove the 2 bolts, the chain guide slide and the crankshaft toothed wheel.

The chain .

3. Refitting

CAUTION : Adhere to the tightening torques .


Refit the cotter pin in the crankshaft groove.

Align the crankshaft pinion groove with the crankshaft cotter pin and refit the crankshaft pinion.
Refit the chain guide slide with the 2 bolts.
To refit the timing chain, align the yellow link "c" with the setting mark "b" on the crankshaft pinion as indicated.

To complete the refitting of the timing chain, align the 2 orange links "d" with the setting marks "a" on the camshaft pulleys as indicated.
Refit the chain tensioner slide with the bolt.
Turn the hexagonal part of the inlet camshaft anticlockwise to slacken the timing chain on the tensioner side and refit the tensioner with the 2 bolts.

Remove the pin, turn the crankshaft through 2 complete revolutions and release the chain tensioner.
Check that the setting mark "a" on the camshaft pulley is at the top with the chain taut.
Replace the timing gear cover .

Coat the lip of a new lip seal with engine oil.


Fit the new crankshaft seal using the tool [0196.B].
Degrease the joint faces of the cylinder block and of the timing cover.

Apply a bead of seal paste to the cylinder block at "g" and to the timing cover at "h" as indicated and refit the timing cover "h".
Seal paste : AUTOJOINT OR.

CAUTION : Refit the timing cover within 3 minutes after applying the beads of seal paste.

Tighten the 11 bolts in the order indicated.


Remove the excess seal paste.

Fit a new coolant pump seal on the timing cover and refit the coolant pump.
Tighten the 5 bolts in the order indicated.

Immobilise the crankshaft pulley with the tool [0132.AA] and tighten the bolt.
Refit the oil filter seal on the timing cover and refit the oil filter support.

Tighten the 3 bolts in the order indicated.


Refit the cylinder head cover gasket in the cylinder head cover groove and on the central bosses indicated by the arrows.

CAUTION : Check the positioning of the gasket which must be seated fully at the base of the bosses.

"l" : 3 to 4 mm.
Apply a bead of seal paste "l" to the joint faces of the cylinder head and of the timing cover.
Seal paste : AUTOJOINT OR.

CAUTION : Refit the cylinder head cover within 3 minutes and tighten the bolts and nuts within 15 minutes after applying the bead of seal paste "l".
Tighten the 13 bolts and 2 nuts to the recommended torque in the order indicated.
After tightening all of the bolts and nuts, check that "1" and "2" are tightened to the recommended torque.

Refit the crankshaft position sensor.

CAUTION : Do not use any parts which have been dropped or knocked.

CAUTION : Check the condition of the O-ring before refitting it.

Coat the O-ring with a thin layer of engine oil.


Refit the crankshaft position sensor with the bolt.
Connect the crankshaft position sensor connector.
Fit a new O-ring on the dipstick guide tube.
Coat the O-ring with a thin layer of engine oil.

Refit the dipstick guide tube with the bolt.


Refit the alternator .
Fit the coolant pump spring clip.
Apply seal paste (AUTOJOINT OR) to the edge of the lower crankcase.
Refit the engine-gearbox assembly.
Refit the drive shafts.
Refit the lower casing .
Refit the ancillary drive belt.
Fill and top up the engine and gearbox with oil.
Fill and bleed the engine cooling circuit.
Check all the levels.
ESSENTIAL : Perform the operations to be carried out following reconnection of the battery.

Reconnect the battery negative terminal.
