CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Mental health has increasingly become a significant focus in educational
settings, particularly due to the rising concerns about students’ emotional well-being.
Adolescents, especially senior high school students, face multiple pressures, including
academic performance, social interactions, and future career choices, all of which can
have a profound impact on their mental health (World Health Organization, 2021).
This issue is particularly relevant for students in the Humanities and Social Sciences
(HUMSS) strand, as they often engage in deep, reflective, and emotionally charged
subjects that can heighten stress and anxiety levels.
At Cavite National High School, there is a growing need to understand how
mental health awareness affects HUMSS students, particularly in terms of their
academic performance, social interactions, and personal development. Mental health
awareness programs have been shown to increase knowledge and reduce stigma,
thereby encouraging students to seek help when needed and to engage in healthier
coping mechanisms (Gulliver et al., 2010). However, there is limited research that
specifically examines how this awareness impacts HUMSS students, who may
experience unique challenges due to the nature of their academic focus.
This study aims to explore the perspectives of senior high school HUMSS
students at Cavite National High School regarding the influence of mental health
awareness on their academic and personal lives. Understanding their experiences and
perceptions can contribute to the development of more effective mental health

programs tailored to their specific needs, promoting overall student well-being and
success.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
This study aims to evaluate the impact of mental health awareness on HUMSS
students at Cavite National High School:
Specifically, it aims to answer the following questions:
1. What is the level of mental health awareness among senior high school students,
and how does it vary across different demographic factors such as age, gender, and
socioeconomic status?
2. How do senior high school students perceive the availability and accessibility of
mental health resources and support systems within their school and community?
3. What are the most common mental health challenges faced by senior high school
students, and how do they relate to their level of mental health awareness?
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
This study explores the impact of mental health awareness on HUMSS
students at Cavite National High School.
The significance of this study is as follows:
Enhanced Mental Health Support for HUMSS Students. The study will provide
insights that can lead to tailored mental health programs, improving the emotional
well-being and coping skills of HUMSS students.

4
Improved Academic Performance. By addressing mental health issues, students may
experience better focus and engagement in their studies, which can contribute to
higher academic achievement.
Reduction of Mental Health Stigma. Increased awareness can help normalize
discussions about mental health, encouraging students to seek help without fear of
judgment or stigma.
Informed School Policy Development. The research will offer valuable data to school
administrators, helping them implement more effective mental health policies and
support systems for students.
SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS
This study focuses on exploring the impact of mental health awareness on
HUMSS (Humanities and Social Sciences) students at Cavite National High School -
senior high school. Specifically, the study will investigate how mental health
awareness influences students’ attitudes, knowledge, and behaviors related to mental
well-being. The research will involve surveying senior high school students enrolled
in the HUMSS strand, assessing their current understanding of mental health issues,
and determining if heightened awareness has resulted in any tangible changes in their
academic and social life.The study will also explore the ways in which mental health
programs, interventions, or discussions (formal or informal) within the school setting
have contributed to this awareness. The research will be limited to HUMSS students
at Cavite National High School, and data will be gathered through questionnaires

distributed to these students. The study will not extend to other strands or schools, nor
will it delve deeply into clinical aspects of mental health conditions, focusing instead
on awareness and perceptions.
The study's findings will be constrained by several limitations. First, the
research is limited to HUMSS students at Cavite National High School - senior high
school, which may not fully represent the perspectives of students from other strands
or schools. The relatively small sample size may also limit the generalizability of the
findings to a larger population of students. Another limitation lies in the methodology
itself, as the use of self-reported questionnaires may result in biased or incomplete
responses, as students might be reluctant to disclose their true feelings about sensitive
mental health topics. The study will not include expert clinical input, which means
that any observed changes in attitudes or behaviors may not be thoroughly backed by
professional psychological evaluations. Finally, the study will not cover all factors
influencing mental health awareness, such as the role of family or media influence,
which could be explored in future research. These gaps and constraints highlight areas
where further study is needed to gain a more comprehensive understanding of how
mental health awareness can be effectively promoted within the student population.
DEFINITION OF TERMS
This study employs specific terms and concepts that require clear and precise
definitions to ensure accurate interpretation. Therefore, the following operational

Slovin’s Formula:
a = N/(1+Ne2)
Where:
a = sample size
N = total population
e = margin of error (0.05 or 5%)
Substituting the values
n = 494/(1+494 x 0.05^2)
n = 494/(1+494 x 2.235)
n = 494/(1+1.05.09)
n = 494/2.0509
n = 240.86 = 241
