Pre-assessment : _____/5
Identify the type of motion in the following
My New vocabulary
Translatory Motion
Periodic motion
Non-Periodic motion
Rotational motion
Vibratory motion
Oscillatory motion
Rectilinear motion
Curvilinear motion
Notes:
Rest and motion:
Rest: A body is said to be at rest, if there is no change in its position over a period of time.
Motion: A body is said to be in motion, if it changes its position over a period of time
Types of Motion
1.Translatory Motion
If an object moves as a whole so that every part of the object moves through the same
distance in a given period of time, then the motion is said to be translatory motion.
Two types of translatory motion:
Rectilinear and curvilinear
If an object moves in a straight line, its motion is said to be rectilinear. Eg: A car moving along a
straight road
If an object moves along a curved line, the motion is said to be curvilinear. A car taking a U-
turn

1. A gravitational force of 70 newtons acts on a body on the surface of the earth. If the earth were replaced by
a heavier body, what would happen to the gravitational force experienced by the body?

1. In 1962, an astronaut Michael Collins dropped a camera while he was doing a 'spacewalk' and it started
floating away from him. If the camera kept moving away from the earth and did not go near any object or
C. It would have broken into pieces. D. It would be on the surface of the moon.
Write one example for each of the following:
1.Rectilinear motion:
2. Curvilinear motion:
3. Circular motion:
4.Rotational motion:
5.Vibratory motion:
6.Oscillatory motion:
7.Periodic motion:
8. Non-Periodic motion:
Types of motion
Group 1
1. All objects on the earth are at rest with respect to the earth. Why?
Ans. The earth indeed is moving, but the objects on it are moving along with it too, and hence with respect to the
Earth, the objects are at rest.
2. List and describe any two examples where different types of motion occur simultaneously.
Group 2
1. While travelling in a train, it appears that the tree is near the track are moving whereas co-passengers
appear to be stationary. Explain the reason.
Ans.When we see the trees from a moving train, their position is changing with respect to us. Hence they appear to
be moving. On the other hand, the position of co-passengers is not changing with respect to us, hence they appear
to be stationary.
2.‘In an object different types of motion can occur simultaneously’. Do you agree with this statement? Justify
your answer using the example of a person riding a bicycle.
The pedal shows rotational motion. The tyre or tube shows circular motion. The feet shows circular motion.
Group 3
1. What is the difference between motion of a falling stone and motion of a stone tied to a thread and
whirled with hand?
Motion of a stone tied to a thread and whirled with hand – Circular motion
2. Analyse real life situations where more than one type of motion occurs simultaneously.
Group 4
Ans. Occurrence of day and night happens only due to periodic motion of earth in a certain Orbit around the
sun.
If the rotation and revolution of earth does not occur in periodic intervals around the sun this affects the
formation of day night and which commonly affects occurrence of months and years as well.
1. In a game of tug-of-war, each team pulls the two sides of a rope till one team is able to pull the other team
to a mark. In the game shown below, Team P won the game. Which of the following correctly shows the forces
A.
B.
C.
D.
2. For an experiment, Sayana will need to repeatedly measure and add either 24, 32, 38 or 40 ml of water.
3. Chandrasekhar has to move up a load and is considering three different ways of doing it, as shown in the
figure. Which one will require the least force?
A. P B. Q
