CHAPTER I

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

A school canteen is a place where students mostly buy their lunch,

breakfast, and drinks just to satisfy their hunger and thirst. Canteens in

schools are implemented so that the students will not be required to go

farther from the school campus. Every school canteen follows a rule to be

able to give the students good quality of food, service, and hygiene to make

the student be satisfied.

The Department of Education is strongly committed to support

students’ health and wellbeing through its curriculum in schools and range

initiatives that offer opportunities for physically fit individuals who loves

eating healthy food. Schools are encouraged to implement comprehensive

health and wellbeing programs, including food and nutrition education. They

help to eliminate malnutrition and serve as a way for the development of

desirable eating habits among students. By virtue of Dep. Ed order No.14.

S,2005, the instruction to ensure consumption of nutritious and safe foods in

schools that all schools must have school canteens.

We are conducting this study to know what the customers really feel

and if the school canteens are following the DepEd memo and to find out if

there are ways to improve the school canteens.

There are two types of managing a school canteen ; the first is

school managed canteen and teachers cooperative -managed canteen .The

first type is the school managed canteen that is used most of the schools

because it is more service oriented and teachers cooperative management

where it has clearness in terms of expense and profit of the school canteen

and it is more decisive to the resources or the inventory in the canteen .Both

shall practice to have safety and security measures .(DepEd Order No. 8

series of 2007).

A school canteen must manage the facilities properly and service

should be the main consideration for implementing a school canteen and

profit shall be secondary priority since the students is only depending on the

allowances that are given by their parents. (DepEd Order No. 8 series of

20007).

The canteen should also provide the students variety of foods and

dishes that enhance their skills and knowledge. Presently, Kasibu National

Agricultural School (KNAS) has various of challenges that need to be

addressed especially in terms of its canteen service quality provided to the

students. For instance, a lot of students complain about the prices of canteen

products because it is too expensive, the students cannot afford because of

their low number of allowances. Teachers and students also recommend a

more spacious venue for canteen because most of the time it is crowded.
There are also various experiences and complaints from the students

regarding the kind of or variety of foods that are being displayed in the

canteen.
