Functions
MISS MELINDA G. BELARMINO ENHANCED MATHEMATICS 9
Most Essential Learning Competency
• graphs a quadratic function: (a) domain; (b) range; (c) intercepts; (d) axis
of symmetry; (e) vertex; (f) direction of the opening of the parabola.
(M9AL – Ig – h – i – 1)
• determines (a) domain; (b) range; (c) intercepts; (d) axis of symmetry; (e)
vertex; (f) direction of the opening of the parabola. (SSP_M9AL – Ig)
Learning Objectives
a. determine the (a) domain; (b) range; (c) intercepts; (d) axis of
symmetry; (e) vertex; (f) direction of the opening of the
parabola; (g) maximum/ minimum value;
b. create table of values and sketch the graph of quadratic
function.

FUNCTION
GRAPH OF QUADRATIC FUNCTIONS
What are the steps in graphing a quadratic function?
1) If the equation of the function is in standard form transform
it first into vertex form.
2) Identify the vertex of the function.
3) Create a table of values where vertex is at the middle.
4) Plot the points and sketch the graph.
5) Determine the (a) domain; (b) range; (c) intercepts; (d) axis
of symmetry; (e) vertex; (f) direction of the opening of the
parabola; (g) maximum/minimum value.
GRAPH OF QUADRATIC FUNCTIONS
DOMAIN
The domain is always ℝ or (−∞, ∞).
RANGE
The range depends on the 𝑦 − coordinate, 𝑘, of the vertex
and the orientation of the parabola:
✓ If 𝑎 > 0, the vertex is the lowest point on the graph so the
range of the function is 𝑘, ∞ .
✓ If 𝑎 < 0, the vertex is the highest point on the graph so the
range of the function is −∞, 𝑘 .
GRAPH OF QUADRATIC FUNCTIONS
INTERCEPTS
Intercepts are the points where the parabola crosses the axes.
✓ The 𝑥 – intercepts are the points (𝑠, 0), where 𝑠 is a real
solution to 𝑓(𝑥) = 0.
✓ The 𝑦 – intercept is the point (0, 𝑓(0)).

AXIS OF SYMMETRY
The axis of symmetry, 𝑥 = ℎ is the
equation of the vertical line
through the vertex. This means
the graph is symmetric.
GRAPH OF QUADRATIC FUNCTIONS
MAXIMUM OR MINIMUM VALUE
The maximum or minimum value depends on the y – coordinate, 𝑘, of the vertex
and the orientation of the parabola:
✓ the minimum value of the quadratic equation if the parabola opens upward in
which 𝑎 > 0.
✓ the maximum value of the quadratic equation if the parabola opens downward
in which 𝑎 < 0.
GRAPH OF QUADRATIC FUNCTIONS

Let’s graph each of the quadratic function.
