CSC2901 – Discrete Structures
Tutorial Sheet I
1. Let 𝑎 and 𝑏 be integers. Prove the following:
a. If they are both even, then their sum is also even.
b. If they are both even, then their product is also even.
c. If their sum is even then either both are even numbers or they are both odd
numbers.
d. If their sum is even then so is their difference.
2. Let 𝑎 and 𝑏 be integers. Prove that if their sum is odd then one of them is even and
the other is odd.
𝑥+𝑦
3. Let 𝑥 and 𝑦 be non-negative numbers. Show that if √𝑥𝑦 = , then 𝑥 = 𝑦.

4. Let 𝑎, 𝑏 and 𝑐 be the sides and hypotenuse of a right-angled triangle. Show that if the
𝑐2
area of the triangle is equal to , then the triangle is isosceles.
2

5. Let 𝑎, 𝑏 and 𝑟 be integers and n be a positive integer. Prove that if 𝑎 and 𝑏 leave the
same remainder 𝑟, when divided by 𝑛, then the difference of 𝑎 and 𝑏 is divisible by 𝑛.
6. Show that there exists a prime number of the form 𝑛2 – 1 where n is greater or equal
to 2.
7. Prove that √2, is an irrational number.
8. Prove that 1 + 3√2 is irrational
9. Generate the formula for the sum of the first
a. n positive integers
b. n positive even integers
c. n positive odd integers
10. Use the principle of mathematical induction to prove that your formulas are correct.
11. Prove using the principle of mathematical induction that 4𝑛 − 1 is divisible by 3 for all
𝑛 ≥ 1.
12. Prove that for every integer 𝑎 there exists a unique additive inverse for which the sum
of 𝑎 and this inverse is equal to 0.
13. Evaluate the first 4 sums (n = 1, 2, 3 and 4) of

1
𝑛
1

(2𝑖 − 1)(2𝑖 + 1)
𝑖=0

a. Guess the general formula for this summation.

b. Use the principle of mathematical induction to prove the your formula is
correct
14. Prove that for any integer, 𝑛 ≥ 1, 𝑥 𝑛 − 𝑦 𝑛 is divisible by 𝑥 − 𝑦, where x and y are
integers such that 𝑥 ≠ 𝑦
