Information and Communication Technology

ICT stands for Information and Communication Technology. It is a broad term that describes the use of
technology to store, create, share, and exchange information. ICT includes a wide range of technologies, such
as:
 Computers
 The internet
 Live broadcasting technologies, such as radio, television, and webcasting
 Recorded broadcasting technologies, such as podcasting, audio and video players, and storage devices
 Telephony, such as fixed or mobile, satellite, visio/video-conferencing, etc.
Applications
Information and communication technology (ICT) has many applications in the university system, including:
Teaching and learning
ICT can improve the teaching and learning process by allowing students to study at any time and from
anywhere. It can also help students develop fundamental skills and increase their enthusiasm and commitment.
Administrative services
ICT can make administrative tasks more efficient by simplifying the management of student data, record
keeping, and document processing. It can also make it easier for applicants to process admission, fee payment,
and registration online.
Curriculum development
ICT can help with the transaction of the curriculum, especially during times like the COVID-19 pandemic.
Digital libraries
ICT can be used to create digital libraries that provide the same services as traditional libraries, but with the
added advantage of digital storage, searching, and communication.
Library automation
ICT can be used to reduce the need for human intervention in library services, allowing users to access
information more easily and at a lower cost.
Challenges
The implementation of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) can face many challenges,
including:
Infrastructure
Unreliable power supply, limited high-speed internet, and insufficient hardware can make ICT-based projects
less effective.
Internet connectivity
ICT-based applications require uninterrupted internet and telecommunication services. In some areas, mobile
telephony and internet access may not be adequate.
Training
Teachers may need training on how to use ICT in teaching.
Policy
ICT implementation depends on policies and ICT infrastructure. Political constraints, such as conflicts in values
and goals, can be a barrier to ICT policy implementation.
Knowledge
Teachers' knowledge and abilities can be a major obstacle to the use of ICT in education.
Educational opportunities
ICT can support traditional learning approaches, but it can also add new educational opportunities.
SWAYAM (Study Webs of Active-Learning for Young Aspiring Minds)
SWAYAM is a programme initiated by Ministry of Education, Government of India and designed to achieve
the three cardinal principles of Education Policy viz., access, equity and quality. The objective of this effort is to
take the best teaching learning resources to all, including the most disadvantaged. SWAYAM seeks to bridge
the digital divide for students who have hitherto remained untouched by the digital revolution and have not been
able to join the mainstream of the knowledge economy.
The courses hosted on SWAYAM are in 4 quadrants – (1) video lecture, (2) specially prepared reading material
that can be downloaded/printed (3) self-assessment tests through tests and quizzes and (4) an online discussion
forum for clearing the doubts.
What is a MOOC?
The traditional classroom is limited in how many students it can serve, but millions of people around the world
want — and need — quality education. MOOCs are massive open online courses. The concept, spearheaded by
edX, began as an opportunity for organizations to offer online courses to students all over the world, in the
millions, for free.
