IV. PROCEDURES
A. Reviewing previous lesson or
presenting the new lesson. ELICIT
The students will be asked to recall the previous topic which is
all about Water and soil chemistry.

B. Establishing a purpose for the

lesson ENGAGE
The students will be grouped into 3 and will guess and spell the
jumble word that will be given.

EASY: MODERATE: HARD:

C. Presenting examples/ instances ECOLOGY BIODIVERSITY ECOSYSTEM
of the new lesson HABITAT SPECIES ENVIRONMENT

EXPLORE
D. Discussing new concepts and
practicing new skills. A short description about biodiversity will be discussed.

What is biodiversity?
Biodiversity is the variety of all living things; the different plants,
animals, fungi and microorganisms, the genetic information
E. Discussing new concepts and they contain and the ecosystems they form.
practicing new skills
A short video about biodiversity. Students will answer the
following questions.

1. What are the levels of biodiversity?

2. Cite examples of each level of biodiversity?

F. Developing mastery (leads to EXPLAIN

Formative Assessments) What are the three levels of biodiversity?

Species Diversity: species diversity refers to the variety of

different types of species found in a particular area. It is the
biodiversity at the most basic level. It includes all the species
ranging from plants to different microorganisms.

Genetic Diversity: genetic diversity is the variety of genes

within a species. Each species is made up individuals that have
their own particular genetic compositions, each having different
genetic compositions. To conserve genetic diversity, different
populations of a species must be conserved.

Ecosystem Diversity: known as the largest scale of biodiversity,

is the different kinds of places where organisms live and the
interconnection that bind these organisms together. That deals
with variations in ecosystems within a geographical location
and its overall impact on human existence and the
environments.
EXAMPLE:
Desert

Grassland

Tundra

Marine

The importance of Biodiversity.

Biodiversity and its maintenance are very important for
sustaining life on Earth. A few reasons explaining the
importance of biodiversity are;
Ecological Stability: every species has a specific role in an
ecosystem. They capture and store energy and also produce
and decompose organic matter. The ecosystem supports the
services without which humans cannot survive. A diverse
ecosystem is more productive and can withstand
environmental stress.

Economic Importance:
• Biodiversity is a reservoir of resources for the
manufacture of food, cosmetic products and pharmaceuticals.
• Crops livestock, fishery and forests are a rich source of
food.
• Wild plants such as cinchona and foxglove plant are
used for medical purposes.
• Wood, fibres, perfumes, lubricants, rubber, resins,
poisons, and the cork are all derived from different plant
species.

Ethical importance: all species have a right to exist. Humans

should not cause their voluntary extinction. Biodiversity
preserved different cultures and spiritual heritage. Therefore,
it is very important to conserve biodiversity.

Threats
• Habitat Loss: habitat loss includes habitat destruction
and habitat fragmentation. Habitat destruction occurs when
the physical environment required be a species is altered so
that the species can no longer lives.
• Overexploitation: overexploitation (overharvesting)
involves hunting, fishing, or otherwise collecting organisms at
a faster rate than they can be replenished.
• Pollution: pollution occurs when chemicals, particles,
or other materials are released into the environment. Harming
the organisms there. Pollution has contributed to the decline
of many threatened species.
• Invasive species: are non – native organisms that,
when introduced to an area out of its native range. Disrupt the
community they invade. Non – native (exotic) refers to species
occurring outside of their historic distribution.
• Climate change: global climate change is also a
consequence of human population needs for energy, and the
use of fossils fuels to meet those needs. Essentially, burning
fossils fuels, including as oil, natural gas, and coal, increases
carbon dioxide concentrations in the atmosphere.
G. Finding practical applications of ELABORATE
concepts and skills in daily living.
After the discussion, the students will be grouped into 2 and
will have a game called “GUESS ME”

Each group will have 1 representative and will act at the front
based on the word that will be given (no speaking allowed).

The rest of the group will guess what the student is attempting
to portray.
H. Making generalizations and
abstractions about the lessons
After the game, students will be asked on
how biodiversity is important to daily lives.

EVALUATION

I. Students will answer the assessment on a ½ crosswise sheet of

paper

1. Give the three levels of biodiversity

2. It refers to the variety of different types of species
found in a particular area.
3. Known as the largest scale of biodiversity.
4-5: Give at least two threats of biodiversity
6-8: In your own words, define biodiversity?
9-10: Why is biodiversity important?

J. Additional activities for EXTEND

application or remediation
Advance study about the Solar, Wind, and Hydropower.
