Development

Different people can have different developmental goals.

What may be development to one may not be the same for another. This can sometimes lead to
conflicts.

One thing in common is that most of the people need more income. They also seek equal
treatment, respect, security, etc.
If women are engaged in paid work, then they will respected more by other people but for this,
there should be an equal distribution for house chores. They also need a safe and secure
environment to work.
Development includes the betterment in all these aspects.

National Development
It is developing the nation as a whole by combining the aspects of all people in common.

Comparing Countries on basis of Development

For comparing countries, one of the most important attributes is their income. The income
means not only monetary income but also excess of everything human beings need.
The income of the country is the income of all the residents of the country. This is the total
income of the nation.

Development 1
BUT total income is not an effective measure since it does not show what an average person is
likely to earn. Some may earn a lot while some may earn really less but these are added together
to calculate the total income.
Due to this we compare the average income of the country, which is

avg income= TOTAL INCOME / TOTAL POPULATION

The Average Income is also called Per capita Income.

According to WORLD DEVELOPMENT REPORTS (by World Bank),
Countries with per capita income of:

$49300< per annum → rich countries

$2500> per annum → poor countries

INDIA → $6700 per annum

Other Criteria for comparing Development

Per Capita Net State Domestic Product at Current Prices (simply: per capita income of the
state)

Haryana > Kerala > Bihar

Infant Mortality Rate

Bihar >Haryana >Kerala

*Kerala has low infant mortality rate because it has adequate provision of basic health and
educational facilities.

Net Attendance Ratio {[(/100)(ages 14-15)]}

Kerala >Haryana >Bihar

Public Facilities
Money cannot buy all the goods and services that you may need to live well. The best and
cheapest way to provide these goods and services is to provide it collectively.

Human Development Report

Health and education indicators have come to be used widely along with income as a measure of
development.

Human Development Report (by UNDP) compares countries based on the education levels of
the people, their health status and per Capita income.

Sustainability Of Development
Renewable resources are replenished by nature but even so, these resources could be overused
which results in the depletion of the resource.
Non renewable resources are those which will get exhausted after years of use as it has a fixed
stock on earth which cannot be replenished.

New resources are being discovered and these resources add more to the stock but even these
will get exhausted.

Consequences of environmental degradation do not respect national or state boundaries; this

issue is no longer region or nation specific.
