MATH 142 Basic Calculus II, Spring 2023-2024 Question Set #2

Q 1. Find the volume of the solid generated by rotating the area between the curves y = x,
x = 0 and y = 1 about y-axis.

Q 2. Find the volume V of the solid obtained by rotating the region bounded by the given
curves y = 2e−x , y = 2, x = 2 about y = 4.

Q 3. Find the volume of the solid generated by revolving the region about the y-axis. The
2 2
region is in the
√ first quadrant bounded on the
√ left by the circle x + y = 3, on the right by
the line x = 3 and above by the line y = 3.

Q 4. Let R(a) be the region bounded by the graph of f (x) = ax − x2 and the x-axis for
0 ≤ x ≤ a, where a is a positive constant.
a) Compute the volume V(a) of the solid generated by revolving R(a) about the x-axis.
b) Compute the volume W(a) of the solid generated by revolving R(a) about the y-axis.
c) Find all values of a for which V(a)=W(a).

Q 5. Consider the region bounded by the graphs of f (x) = x2 + 1 and g(x) = 3 − x2 . Write
the integral for the volume of the solid of revolution obtained by rotating this region about
x-axis and evaluate it.

Q 6. What is the volume obtained by revolving the region bounded by y = x2 −4 and y = 4−x2
around the line x = 2?

Q 7. Write the integral that calculates the volume of the solid generated by revolving the

region enclosed by the curves y = x2 + 1, x = 2 y and the lines x = 3 − y, x = 0 in the first
quadrant about the line y = −1. (Do not evaluate the integral)

Q 8. The region bounded by the curve y = ln x, the lines x = 4 and y = 1 is revolved about
the y-axis to generate a solid. Find the volume of this solid.

Q 9. Consider the region in the first quadrant, bounded by the curves y = cos x, y = sin x
and the y-axis. Find the volume of the solid generated by revolving the region about the
x-axis.

Q 10. The region between the curve y = 1/x2 and the x-axis from x = 1/2 to x = 2 is
revolved about the y-axis to generate a solid. Find the volume of the solid.
