UCAS operates similarity detection software which analyses personal statements

against all those which have previously been submitted. Plagiarising your
personal statement will result in your universities being informed, who can then
decide to reject your application or withdraw an offer.

I first gained an appreciation for computer science by creating modifications for the
game Minecraft using Java as a way to enhance the gameplay for me and my friends.
As my interest in programming grew, I gained proficiency in a handful of languages
(such as Python, JavaScript, and Go). Eventually, I turned this hobby into a vocation,
undertaking freelance work to create Minecraft modifications for groups of players to
customise the game to their needs. Having my creations experienced by hundreds of
concurrent users confirmed to me that computing was the path I wanted to pursue.

Artificial intelligence is a particular area of computer science which has enthralled me

due to its broad range of applications, spanning from everyday scenarios like internet
search results to high-stakes environments such as assisting with medical diagnoses. I
enhanced my understanding of this subject through a MOOC by Stanford University on
machine learning. This course complemented my maths and further maths A Levels by
applying my existing knowledge of areas such as matrices, and combining it with new
ideas such as multivariable calculus and its use in regression problems. I then used the
skills I learnt to implement a neural network library in Go, which I was able to train to
recognise handwritten digits with a high level of accuracy.

Within school, I have participated in several national programming competitions, such

as the British Informatics Olympiad and TCS Oxford Computing Challenge (where I
achieved the highest score in my cohort and a distinction). These events have
developed my abilities in working to a high standard while under time pressure, and
finding efficient solutions to problems which initially seem difficult to approach.
I have additionally been widening my computing knowledge through my A Level
computer science project, as part of which I am creating an interpreter for a
programming language. The process of designing and developing the program has
challenged me to think carefully about the algorithms which can be applied to the
problem, and has required me to research and comprehend the processes of code
parsing and translation in greater depth than is offered by the A Level syllabus.

By partaking in PwC's Virtual Insight Week, I learnt how businesses are using emerging
technologies to transform their work. A specific example I found engaging was the use
of drones and computer vision software to accurately take inventory of the coal owned
by a mining company, rather than using humans for the same task. This experience
opened my eyes to how concepts in computing can be used in a wide range of fields,
not just those with obvious links to computer science.

Through the NCSC CyberFirst Advanced course, I learnt and actively applied
knowledge in areas of cybersecurity such as open-source intelligence, ethical hacking,
and cryptography. This field has captivated me because of its increasing relevance in
the modern age, where we are entrusting online entities with more of our data than ever
before, and so have an increased incentive to prevent malicious parties from
compromising it.

Outside school, I have played for my local hockey club for twelve years, which has
helped me to develop teamwork skills. I have also achieved grade six in piano and
trumpet, previously being part of my county's youth jazz orchestra. These experiences
have taught me the importance of practice and resilience when honing a skill.
Additionally, I volunteer as a Young Leader for my local Beaver Scout group, where I
have helped organise and lead the weekly sessions over several years. Overall, I enjoy
computer science because it is a rapidly developing discipline with connections to many
areas within society, and I believe that my experiences, determination, and desire to
advance my understanding will help me succeed in studying it at university.
