Computer Science connects my love of pure problem-solving and finding practical and
creative solutions to real-life problems. Whether discovering new techniques or applying
old and trusted methods, I can never get enough of solving interesting challenges. What
I love about computer science is that I can break down a system into its smallest
components, understanding each at a micro-scale and then connect them together
forming larger systems. At university, I am looking forwards to expanding my knowledge
of all aspect of computer science, from optimised algorithm design at the micro level to
designing and building complete systems composed of these. In particular, I would like
to learn about low-level and high-performance computing areas such as hardware
design, operating systems and compiler design.
My interest in computer graphics developed doing work experience at [redacted]. This
led into my EPQ, where I developed a 3D rasterizer in OpenGL and C++ to explore the
fundamentals of 3D rendering including a procedurally generated terrain within it.
Throughout I explored some exciting new areas of maths including linear algebra for 3D
manipulation and fast vectorised calculation for the 3D rasterizer. I loved the direct links
to the low-level hardware and the design and optimisation enabled by my new
understanding. I developed skills in finding and reading implementable academic
papers.
Since 2018, I have co-led a team designing and engineering a robot to compete in the
First Tech Challenge Competition. I particularly enjoyed designing the holonomic x-
drivetrain, first in CAD and then building it as it combines a complex engineering
challenge with a tightly linked software control system (in Java) for a field centric drive
system. Through co-leading, I developed my leadership skills in effectively prioritising
and assigning tasks and being able to help members with any aspect of the robot or
task. Having a good overview and understanding of all aspects of the robot was vital for
this.
I relished the new problem solving and mathematical techniques I gained when
competing in the UKMT senior maths challenge (achieving gold), and UKMT team
challenge. In particular, I enjoyed working in the team challenge collaboratively
developing skills and exploring mathematical concepts.
Over recent years, I competed in several team-based game jams, [redacted] and
Ludum Dare, stretching my knowledge and learning new areas of computer science
such as path-finding algorithms and game AI. Each jam is both a chance to develop a
game but even more it is an opportunity to learn new skills in a fast-paced and
experimental environment. Implementing a 2D flashlight was particularly interesting as I
got to learn about ray casting to dynamically generate a mesh and stencil shaders for
the flashlight beam and scene lighting.
In my free time, I enjoy working on programming projects, including discord.py python
bots and contributing to open source projects. Recently I developed a cross-platform
build system using Gradle for a Java open source project. Programming discord bots
introduced me to asynchronous programming and developing complex databases.
Technical theatre is a long-term hobby of mine on both small-scale school productions
and larger paid productions in professional venues. I recently joined a local club of
volunteers who run the technical theatre in many venues around the city. I loved
learning all aspects of it and the thrill of being involved in the performances which is
something I hope to develop at university.
To relax I enjoy reading widely and a wide range of outdoor pursuits including hiking,
kayaking, and skiing.
I love challenges such as creating efficient solutions to complex problems. It excites me
to explore and learn about other peoples solutions and techniques. I desire to further my
understanding of computer science and use this to contribute back to the community.
