Section 7.

Common Logarithms

A. Definitions

Base : 10

B. Properties of Logarithms
C. Logarithmic equations
1. Solve the equation in the form log (Ax + B) = C
Since log (A + B) ≠ log A + log B , [ log (A - B) ≠ log A - log B ]
∴Take (Ax + B) as a group
( Ax+ B )=10 C

Check the solution after solving the equation.

log x is undefined for x ≤ 0. (i.e. defined only for positive values of x.)

2. Convert a logarithmic equation in the form log x = log y then x = y.

[ We are not cancelling the ‘log’. ]
Proof: Let log x = log y = z.
Then, log x = z and log y = z
By definition, x=10 z and y=10 z
Therefore x = y
