MATHS ASSIGNMENT

Name: Himanshu Saini

Standard: X
Roll Number:
School: Gurudas P Gauns Memorial High School
Aim:
To draw the floor plan of a classroom and estimate the
number of tiles needed for the floor and the amount of paint
required for the 4 walls.

Objectives
1) Measure the classroom’s dimensions, including length,
breadth, height, and the dimensions of doors and windows.
2) Calculate the floor area, the number of tiles needed, and
the total area of the walls.
3) Deduct the areas of doors and windows to find the
paintable area and estimate the cost based on paint coverage
and price per liter.

Introduction
This project focuses on applying mathematical concepts of
area, measurement, and estimation to solve real-life
problems. By taking the dimensions of a classroom and its
components, students will learn to plan and calculate the
material and cost requirements for tiling and painting,
which is a critical skill in architecture and interior design.
Method

1) Measurement of Classroom Dimensions:

• Measure the length, breadth, and height of the
classroom.
• Measure the dimensions of the door and windows.

2) Drawing the Classroom Plan:

• Draw a scaled diagram of the classroom floor plan on
graph paper, including doors and windows.

3) Floor Area Calculation:

• Calculate the total area of the classroom floor using the
formula:
Floor area = Length X Breadth

4) Tile Calculation:
• Measure the dimensions of a single tile.
• Calculate the area of one tile:

Tile length = Tile length X Tile breadth

• Calculate the number of tiles required:

Number of tiles =
• Estimate the number of tile boxes needed, assuming each
box contains 10 tiles.

5. Wall Area Calculation:

• Calculate the total area of the four walls using the
formula:
Subtract the total area of doors and windows:

6. Paint Estimation:
• Estimate the amount of paint required, given the
coverage per litre of paint.
• Calculate the cost of painting based on the cost per
square meter.

Dimensions/Measurements:

1) Classroom Shape: Cuboid

Length: 9.56 m
Breadth: 3.60 m
Height: 2.50 m
2) Windows (3): Each 1.25 m x 2.65 m

3) Door (1): 2 m x 1.25 m

4) Tile Dimensions: 1 m x 1 m

Floor Plan of the classroom

Calculation:

1) Calculation of Total Floor Area

Floor Area = Length × Breadth

Floor Area = 9.56 m × 3.60 m = 34.452 m²

2) Calculate the Area of One Tile

Area of One Tile = 1 m × 1 m = 1 m²

3) Calculate the Number of Tiles Needed

Number of Tiles = Total Floor Area ÷ Area of One Tile
Number of Tiles = 34.452 m² ÷ 1 m² = 35 tiles (rounding up)
4) Estimate the Number of Tile Boxes Required
Assuming 10 tiles per box: Number of Boxes = 35 ÷ 10 = 4 boxes
(rounding up)

5) Calculate the Total Area of the 4 Walls

Two long walls: Area = Length × Height × 2 = 9.56 m × 2.50 m ×
2 = 47.85 m²
Two short walls: Area = Breadth × Height × 2 = 3.60 m × 2.50 m
× 2 = 18 m²
Total Wall Area = 47.85 m² + 18 m² = 65.85 m²

6) Calculate the Total Area of the Door and Windows

Window Area (3): Area = 2.65 m × 1.25 m × 3 = 9.9375 m²

Door Area: Area = 2 m × 1.25 m = 2.5 m²

Total Area = 9.9375 m² + 2.5 m² = 12.4375 m²

7) Calculate the Area to be Painted

Paintable Area = Total Wall Area – Total Area of Door and
Windows
Paintable Area = 65.85 m² – 12.4375 m² = 53.4125 m²
8) Calculate the Cost of Painting
Paint Coverage = 14 m²/liter
Paint Cost = 400 rupees/liter
Amount of Paint = 53.4125 m² ÷ 14 = 3.815 liters (rounding up to
4 liters)

Total Cost = 4 liters × 400 rupees = 1526 rupees

Observations

• Total tiles required: 35

• Total tile boxes needed: 4

• Total painting area: 53.4125 m²

• Estimated tiling cost:

• Estimated painting cost:1526 rupees

Conclusion
This project helped in understanding the practical
applications of mathematics in everyday life. By measuring,
calculating, and estimating, we successfully determined the
material and costs for tiling and painting a classroom. This
activity enhances real-world problem-solving skills and the
ability to manage resources .
