Precipitation

Q1. Identify the precipitation type with the help

of the description below :
a: Rainfall.
b: Fog
c: Frost
d: Snowfall
Q2. Look at the following pictures and identify the correct
rainfall type :
Fig (A) Convectional Rainfall
Fig (B) Orographic Rainfall
Fig (C) Cyclonic Rainfall
Q3. Look at the figures above and answer the following
questions :
(1) In figure B, on which side of the mountain is it raining
more?
(A) From the given figure it is understood that it is raining
more on the right side of the mountain
(2) Shade the rain shadow region in figure B and name it.

(3) What is the difference between A and C?

(A)Figure A shows convectional rainfall & figure C shows
cyclonic rainfall.
(4) Stormy winds and floods are associated with which
rainfall type?
(A)Cyclonic rainfall are associated with stormy winds and
floods.
(5) What type of rainfall occurs in Singapore?
(A) Singapore experience convectional rainfall.
Q 4. Identify the odd man out :
(1) Orographic rainfall, acid rain, cyclonic rainfall, convectional
rainfall
Ans) , acid rain
(2) Snowfall, rainfall, hailstones, dew
Ans) dew
(3) Thermometer, rain gauge, anemometer, measuring jar
Ans) measuring jar

Q 5. Answer in brief:
(1) In what ways does precipitation occur on the earth?
Ans) When the water falls on the ground from the clouds in a
solid or liquid form is called precipitation. Snow, hailstones,
rainfall are the three ways of precipitation.
1. Snow- Water vapour directly turns into snowflakes and
creates snowfall when the temperature in the atmosphere
falls below the freezing point.
2. Hail- Much heat on the earth’s surface and the upward air
flow are the reason behind hailstone. The upward movement
of the air takes all the droplets to a higher altitude and makes
solidification because of which hailstone occurs.
3. Rainfall- Reduced temperature of the air with water vapour in
higher altitude occurs Condensation of the vapour. This
condensed water droplets creates Clouds by accumulating
dust particles. When they cannot float in the air anymore
because of their weight, they come down as rainfall.
(2) Comment on the rainfall occurring in the rain shadow area.
Ans)1.The side of the mountain which experiences more rain
fall is called windward sid
2.The opposite side of the mountain is called leeward side
and it gets lesser rainfall because of the obstruction of the
mountains
3 .The amount of vapour in the air reduces after crossing the
mountain and the moisture holding capacity of the air also
increases. 4. This area is also called rain shadow area.

(3) Which type of rainfall occurs in most of the world? Why?

Ans) Orographic rainfall occurs in most of the world.
It happens when moisture-laden winds coming from lakes or seas are
obstructed by the high mountain ranges.
(4) If condensation occurs closer to the earth’s surface, what types
of forms become visible?
Ans) If condensation occurs closer to the earth’s surface it
creates Fog, dew and frost.
Fog- Reduced temperature near the surface of the earth
condenses water vapour and turns it into microscopic water
particles. Fog occurs, when the density of these droplets in the
air increases.
Dew- Moisture-laden air near the earth’s surface creates dew
drops by coming into contact with very cold objects.
Frost- Frozen water droplet is called frost and it is created when
the temperature of the air is less than 0oC.
(5) What precautions should be taken while measuring rainfall ?
Ans) The following precautions should be taken while
measuring the rainfall.
1.Don’t let the rainwater runoff.
2.Don’t let the rainwater penetrate in the ground
3.Don’t let the rainwater evaporate.
Q6. Distinguish between :
(1) Dew and Frost

(2) Snow and Hail
