1. INTRODUCTION

This method statement outlines the procedures and methodologies to be

employed by for the backfilling works at XYZ project XYX. It provides a
comprehensive overview of the activities, equipment, materials, quality control
measures, safety precautions, and environmental considerations associated
with the backfilling process.

This section included procedural requirement for the methodology of

backfilling work.

2. SCOPE:

This method statement provides the controlled sequence of the methodology

that will be used for backfilling Works to achieve the required grades and
compaction levels as specified in the project drawings and specifications. This
is to ensure that all activities are in fully compliance health and safety
standards.

3. REFERENCES:

 Project Specifications
 Project Quality Plan

4. RESPONSIBILITIES / SUPERVISION:

 The Construction Manager is responsible for overseeing the overall

implementation of this method statement and ensures that his team of
Engineers, Foreman and subcontractors are aware of this method
statement and the all resources – human, material and equipment’s are
available to carry out the work as planned and without any delay.

 The Site Engineer is responsible for Coordinating the backfilling

activities to carry out the work as per the approved shop drawings, and
in accordance with this method statement. He is also responsible to
ensure compliance with project requirements.

 The QA/QC Engineer is responsible to conduct regular inspection during

the backfilling process to ensure compliance with the project
specification.
Verify thickness of each layer and the compaction density using
appropriate testing methods (Nuclear density gauge or sand
replacement method).

 The Safety Engineer is responsible to ensure all personnel involved in

Client: Consultant: Contractor:

the backfilling works are trained and certified in equipment operation and
safety procedures as per the project safety plan, and all the personal on
site are using the required Personal Protective Equipment’s like –
Helmet, Gloves, Shoes.

 The Site Surveyor is responsible to establish reference points and

benchmarks to guide the backfilling process. Marking the boundaries and
conducting periodic surveys during the backfilling process and
conducting survey upon completion of the backfilling works to record the
final dimensions and alignment of the backfilled area.

 The Operators are responsible for operating the necessary equipment

(excavators, dump trucks, compactors and rollers) safely and efficiently.

5. RESOURCES:

5.1 Tools & Equipment

 Excavators with appropriate bucket sizes.

 Dump trucks and other transportation equipment’s.
 Loaders.
 Vibratory rollers.
 Water tanker.
 Surveying equipment’s.
 Safety helmets, vests, etc.

5.2 Personnel

 Construction Manager
 Site Engineers
 Surveyor
 QA/QC Engineers
 Safety Officer
 Site Foreman
 Operators
 Laborer’s

6. QUALITY ASSURANCE/CONTROL:

Method Statement for Backfilling Page 4

Client: Consultant: Contractor:

QA/QC Engineer should verify the work has been carried out as per approved
shop drawings and Inspection Request to be raised for the Backfilling and the
required tests.
However, the following points shall be ensured, in particular;

 Monitor the backfilling process closely to ensure compliance with project

specifications and quality standards.
 Conduct regular inspections and tests after layers as required to verify the
quality of the backfilled material and achieved compaction.
 Ensure that backfill material is sourced from approved location and
doesn’t contain contaminants that could harm the environment and
compaction.
 Implement erosion control measures to prevent soil erosion during and
after the backfilling process.
 Skilled operators and laborers are assigned for the job.

7. PROCEDURE:

A. Site Preparation

 Identify the areas requiring backfilling as per the project drawings and
specifications.

 Clear the area of any debris, construction materials, or

obstructions.
Ensure that the excavation is completed and any necessary inspections are
carried out before backfilling commences.

B. Backfill Material Selection

 Verify the type and quality of backfill material specified in the project
documents.

 Ensure that the backfill material is free from organic matter, debris or
contaminants.

 If using engineered backfill material, ensure compliance with

specification regarding gradation, compaction and other properties.

C. Backfilling process

 Begin backfilling from the bottom of the excavation, layer by layer,

ensuring even distribution and compaction.
 Place the backfill material in maximum allowable lifts, typically not
exceeding 300mm thickness for cohesive soils and 200mm for
granular soils.

Client: Consultant: Contractor:

 Compact each lift using suitable compaction equipment to achieve the

specified compaction density.
 Maintain uniform moisture content in the backfill material to facilitate
compaction.
 Pay special attention to the corners and edges of the excavation to
ensure proper compaction and support.
 Use hand tools or small equipment for backfilling near sensitive areas
or utilities to avoid damage.
 Perform periodic checks using surveying equipment to ensure proper
levels and alignments are maintained.

8. Health and Safety:

A. Personal Training and P.P.E

 All personnel involved in the backfilling process must undergo

comprehensive training in safety procedures and the operation of
relevant equipment.
 Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as hard hats, gloves,
safety boots, high-visibility vests, and eye protection must be worn at
all times during the activity.

B. Traffic Management

 Implement a traffic management plan to ensure the safety of workers

and other site personnel.
 Clearly mark out designated pedestrian walkways and vehicle routes.
 Ensure that heavy equipment operators are trained in traffic management
procedures and communicate effectively with ground personnel.

C. Equipment Operation

 Follow proper procedures for the operation of heavy equipment such as

excavators, dump trucks, and compaction machinery.
 Ensure that equipment operators are competent and certified to operate the
machinery safely.
 Conduct regular inspections and maintenance of equipment to prevent
malfunctions and accidents.
