Logic gates are the basic building blocks of any digital system. It is an
electronic circuit having one or more than one input and only one output. The
relationship between the input and the output is based on a certain logic. It is an
electronic circuit having one or more inputs and only one output. The relationship
between the input and output is based on a certain logic.
Based on this, logic gates are named as AND gate, OR gate, NOT gate, etc.
Logic gates perform basic logical functions and are the fundamental building
blocks of digital integrated circuits. Most logic gates take an input of two binary values,
and output a single value of a 1 or 0. Each type of gate has one or more (most often
two) inputs and one output. The principle of operation is that the circuit operates on
just two voltage levels, called logic 0 and logic 1.
Electronic gates require a power supply.
Gate INPUTS are driven by voltages having two nominal values, e.g. 0V and
5V representing logic 0 and logic 1 respectively.
The OUTPUT of a gate provides two nominal values of voltage only, e.g. 0V
and 5V representing logic 0 and logic 1 respectively. In general, there is only
one output to a logic gate except in some special cases.
There is always a time delay between an input being applied and the output
responding.
Lesson 2 . Truth Table
A truth table shows how the truth or falsity of a compound statement depends on
the truth or falsity of the simple statements from which it's constructed.
