(…) In the past several years, the news has been full of stories detailing problems that have emerged
in the context of such social Networking sites as mySpace and Facebook. Although theses sites have
privacy setting options that can scan posted information and protect certain personal content from
general viewing, not all users know how to set such limits, and many are naïve or unaware of the
possible ramifications of what they write, upload, and respond to online. What happens online,
doesn’t always stay online, and not everyone is using social networking with the best intentions.
Social Networking facilitates interaction between members, but participation in a virtual community
can also leave you open to a variety of new types of interpersonal threats and challenges that
sometimes result in real and detrimental consequences. That are numerous examples in the context of
High school and college students, and incidents when students have been suspended or expelled
from their institutions because of what they have posted in their profiles, including pictures of
underage drinking or taking illegal drugs, and explicit threats of violence towards others.
Social Networking sites have also been at the center of some tragic cases of cyberbullying in recent
years: in multiples cases, Young people have committed suicide after being humiliated, harassed, or
bullied (often about their sexuality) in a the context of a community such as Facebook (….)
