6) Find the roots of the polynomial equation (x - 1)3 (x + 1)2 (x + 5) = 0 and state their multiplicity.
Answer : Let f(x) = (x - 1)3 (x + 1)2 (x + 5) = 0. Clearly, we have x = 1, -1, -5.
Hence, the roots are 1 with multiplicity 3, -1 with multiplicity 2 and -5 with multiplicity 1.
7)
Rationalize the denominator of

Answer : Multiplying both numerator and denominator by , we get

3 Marks 8 x 3 = 24
8)
Solve and express the solution using the interval notation.

Answer : Given

Multiplying the numerator and denominator by |2x-1| we get,

⇒ |2x-1| < 6|2x-1|2

⇒ 1< 6 |2x-1|

∴ The solution set is

9)
Solve and graph the solution set in a number line.

Answer : Given -3|x| + 5 < -2

⇒ -3 Ixl < -2 - 5
⇒ -3|x| < -7

This means

[Dividing by -3]
∴ The solution set

10) Without sketching the graphs, find whether the graphs of the following functions will intersect the x-axis
and if so in how many points. y = x2 + 6x + 9
Answer : y = x2 + 6x + 9
Here a = 1, b = 6, c = 9
D = b2 - 4ac = (6)2 - 4 (1) (9)
= 36 - 36 = 0
Since D = 0, the parabola touches the X -axis at only one point.
11) Resolve the following rational expressions into partial fractions.

Answer :

1 = A(x - a) + B(x + a)
Putting x = a in (1) we get,

Putting x = -a in (1) we get,

Answer :

3x + 1 = A(x + 1)B(x - 2)
Puttingg x = -1 in (1) we get,
-3 + 1 = B(-3)

-2 = -3B

Putting x = 2 in (1) we get,

6 + 1 = A(2 + 1)

7 = 3A

13)
If and are the roots of the quadratic equation , form a quadratic polynomial with
zeros

Answer : Given quadratic equation is

Sum of the roots

Product of the roots
Hence, the required quadratic equation is x2 - x (Sum of the roots) + product of the roots = 0.

Multiplying by 3 we get,

14)
Solve 3|x - 2| + 7 = 19 for x.
Answer : 3|x - 2| + 7 = 19, So that we have, |x - 2| = . Thus, we have either, x - 2 = 4 (or)
x - 2 = -4
Therefore the solutions are x = -2 (or) x = 6
15)
Solve 3x2 + 5x - 2 ≤ 0.
Answer : On factorizing the quadratic polynomial we get 3(x + 2) . Draw the number
line.

Mark the critical points -2 and where the factors vanish. On each sub-interval check the sign of (x
+ 2) . To do this pick an arbitrary point in anywhere in the interval. Whatever sign the
resulting value has, the polynomial has the same sign throughout the whole corresponding interval.
(Otherwise, there would be another critical point within the interval). This process is easily organized
in the following table.
Interval Sign of (x+2)Sign of (x- )Sign of 3x2+5x-2

Answer : Let the number of hours to complete the job is x.

Wages from the first scheme = 500 + 70x
Wages from the second scheme = 120x
Given 500 + 70x > 120x
500 > 120x -70x
500 > 50x

10 > x
x < 10
The value of x so that the first scheme gives better wages is x = 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9.
17) A and B are working on similar jobs but their monthly salaries differ by more than Rs. 6000. If B earns
rupees 27000 per month, then what are the possibilities of A's salary per month?
Answer : Let the salary of A be Rs. x
By the given condition B's salary will be more than 6000 + x.
Since B earn Rs. 27,000 per month,
6000 + x < 27,000
|x - 27,000| = 6000
|x - 27,000| = 500
-(-27000) = 500 (or) x - 27000 = 500
x - 27000 = -500 (or) x = 27000 + 500
x = 26,500 (or) x = 27,500 + 500
18) Resolve the following rational expressions into partial fractions.

Answer :

⇒ 1= (Ax + B)(x + 1)(x - 1) + C(x2 + 1) (x - 1) + D(x2 + 1) (x + 1)

Putting x=1 n (1) we get
1 = D (2) (2) ⇒
Putting x = -1 in we get
1 = C(2)(-2) ⇒
Equating the Co-efficient of x3 we get
0=A+C+D⇒A=-C-D

⇒A=0
Putting x = 0 in (1) we get
1 = -B - C +D

19) Solve (2x + 1)2- (3x + 2)2 = 0

Answer : Given equation is (2x + 1)2- (3x + 2)2 = 0
(2x+1+3x+2)(2x+1-3x-2) = 0 [ a2- b2 = (a + b) (a - b) ]
(5x + 3) (-x - 1) = 0
(5x + 3) (x + 1) = 0

Answer :

x = (Ax + B) (x - 1) (x + 2) + C(x2 + 1) (x + 2) + D(x2 + 1) (x - 1) ...(1)

Putting x = 1 in (1) we get

Answer : In this case, note that the denominator has a factor x2 + 1 which does not have real zeros.
Let
Where A, B and C are constants.
We have, 2x = A(x2+ 1) + (Bx + C)(x - 1)
When x = 1, we get A = 1.
When x = 0, we have A - C = 0 and hence A = C = 1.
When x = -1, we have 2A - 2(C - B) = -2, which gives B = -1
Thus,
