Evaluating Functions Algebraically and Graphically
Evaluating Functions Algebraically and Graphically
Objective: To use function notation and evaluate functions algebraically and graphically. Date: _____________
Evaluating Functions
Function Notation is a shorthand way of indicating that an equation is a function.
Function Rule is an equation that represents the output value, such as 𝑓(𝑥), in terms of the input value, 𝑥.
𝑓(𝑥) = 2𝑥
Example 1: If ℎ(𝑥) is represented by the mapping diagram below, evaluate the following:
a. ℎ(3) =
b. ℎ(1) =
For an input value of ______, the function has an output value of _______. In other words, the function
contains the ordered pair: ___________. In function notation, this ordered pair is given as:
_____________.
Example 5: If 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 2 − 4𝑥 and ℎ(𝑥) = 8 − 2𝑥, for what negative value does 𝑓(𝑥) = ℎ(𝑥)?
➢ In addition to numerical values, you can input variables and/or expressions into functions.
Example 6: Evaluate each of the following functions using the given expression/variable:
𝑥−1
a) If 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥+1, evaluate 𝑓(𝑦 + 1)
𝑔(𝑥):
𝑚(𝑥):

𝒙+𝟑
𝒇(𝒙) = 𝟑𝒙 − 𝟒 𝒈(𝒙) = 𝒙𝟐 − 𝟐𝒙 + 𝟏 𝒉(𝒙) = 𝒙−𝟐
a) 𝑓(𝑥 − 5) b) 𝑔(−3𝑥)
c) ℎ(𝑥 + 7) d) 𝑔(𝑥 + 1)
1 f) Find 𝑥 if 𝑔(𝑥) = 4
e) ℎ ( )
