ABSTRACTION Discussion about Self will take place. (Learners pay attention to the class
discussion)
Knowing oneself – is the first step in
personal development.

According to Socrates “It is ridiculous

for him to investigate other
unimportant things when he has not
known his self yet.

Plato “The beginning of knowledge

is self-knowledge”
A Hindu writings Upanishads
confirmed, “Enquiry into the truth of
the self is “self-knowledge”

person’s consciousness.

– It is the agent responsible for an

individual’s action.
-Is defined as the cognitive and
affective representation of one’s
identity, it is then defined in terms of
human characteristics such as
behavior and thought.

Self is identified in various contexts:

1. Psychology – consists of a person's
conscious and unconscious aspects,
their personality, cognitions or
thoughts and feelings. All these traits
or aspects combine together into the
person's core identity.
2. Sociology - the self is a relatively
stable set of perceptions of who we
are in relation to ourselves, others,
and to social systems. The self is
socially constructed in the sense that
it is shaped through interaction with
other people.
3. Religion - self-improvement which
its primary aims the improvement of
the self through believing in God’s
love, realizing the values of life and
learning to have self-control that
helps an individual to have good
morality.

Personality and Self

Personality is the essence of who we

are and is the embodiment of one’s
physical, psychological, cognitive,
affective, and spiritual self.
Therefore, when we speak of the
“Self”, we will describe it in
personality terms.

Nature, Nurture and Personality

Personality is influenced by both:

“Nature ” – which is by hereditary or
genetic make-up.
Republic of the Philippines
Department of Education
REGION VI – WESTERN VISAYAS
SCHOOLS DIVISION OF NEGROS OCCIDENTAL
DISTRICT OF SAN ENRIQUE
SAN ENRIQUE NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

“ Nurture ” – by their environment.

Self-concept
Let the students Imagine themselves
looking into a mirror. Then ask them,
“What do you see? Do see your ideal
self or your actual self?
Self-concept – refers to your
awareness of yourself.
Ideal self – is the self that you aspire
to be. It is the one that you hope will
possess by character.
It is how we want to be.
Actual self – is the one that you
actually see. It is the self that has
characteristics that you were
nurtured or, in some cases, born to
have. It is built in self-knowledge. It is
our self-image
Self-knowledge – is derived from
social interactions that provide
insight into how others react
to you.
