Instruction: Answer all the questions

1: (a) Consider the linear operator F on R2 and the basis S = {u1 , u2 } = {(1, −2), (2, −5)}
where F : R2 −→ R2 is defined by F (x, y) = (2x + 3y, 4x − 5y), v = (5, −7) and
f (v) = (−11, 55). Show that [T ]s [v]s = [T (v)]s .
(b) State the contrast between eigen value and eigen vector.

2: (a) What do you understand


 by the similarity of two matrices A and B?

3: (a) Define the coordinate vector of V relative to the basis S .


(b) Let F : R2 −→ R2 be the linear operator defined by F (x, y) = (2x + 3y, 4x − 5y).
Find:
(i) Find the matrix representation of F relative to the basis S = {u1 , u2 } = {(1, 2), (2, 5)}.
(ii) Find the matrix representation of F relative to the usual basis E = {e1 , e2 } =
{(1, 0), (0, 1)}.

4: (a) What do you understand by linear combination of the vectors in the basis S. Hence,
define the matrix representation of T relative to basis S.
(b) Let V be the vector space of function with basis S = {sint, cost, e3t } and
