2 The Earth has 24 time zones, defined by dividing the Earth into 24 equal longitudinal
segments. These are the regions on Earth that have the same standard time. For example, USA
and India fall in different time zones, but Sri Lanka and India are in the same time zone. A
relation R is defined on the set U = {All people on the Earth} such that R = {(x, y)| the time
difference between the time zones x and y reside in is 6 hours}.
i) Check whether the relation R is reflexive, symmetric and transitive.
ii) Is relation R an equivalence relation?

The Government of India is planning to fix a hoarding board at the face of a

building on the road of a busy market for awareness on COVID-19 protocol.
Ram, Robert and Rahim are the three engineers who are working on this
project. “A” is considered to be a person viewing the hoarding board 20 metres
away from the building, standing at the edge of a pathway nearby. Ram, Robert
and Rahim suggested to the firm to place the hoarding board at three different
locations namely C, D and E. “C” is at the height of 10 metres from the ground
level. For the viewer A, the angle of elevation of “D” is double the angle of
elevation of “C” The angle of elevation of “E” is triple the angle of elevation of
“C” for the same viewer. Look at the figure given and based on the above

Continuity and differentiability

Continuity of a function at a point

Let f be a real function on a subset of the real numbers and let c be a point in the domain of f.

Then f is continuous at c if

limx c f x = f(c)

i.e. If the left-hand limit, right hand limit and value of the function at x=c exist and are equal

to each other.

i.e. limx c− f x Limx c+ f x f c , then f is said to be continuous at x=c.

Continuity in an interval

f is said to be continuous in (a, b) if it is continuous at every point in this interval.

f is said to be continuous in the interval [a, b] if

 f is continuous in (a, b).

 Limx a+ f x f a

 limx b− f x f b

Geometrical Meaning

f will be continuous at x=c if there is no break in the graph of the function at the point

Continuity of some functions

If f and g are real valued functions such that f∘g is defined at a. If g is continuous at a and f is

 f(x) is differentiable in (a, b) if it is differentiable at every point of (a, b).

 f(x) is differentiable in [a, b] if Rf ′ a and Lf ′ b exist and f ′ x exists for every point of

(a, b).

 Every differentiable function is continuous, but the converse is not true.
