Pig Launcher Operating Instructions

PAI Pig Launchers are designed to improve production in the process of pigging a
pipeline. PAI Launchers are used for cleaning and drying pipelines both on new
constructions and maintenance on out of service lines.

The contractor or operator must be trained and meet the standard

requirements to be an operator of the equipment for the purpose it is intended.

The PAI 2400 Pig Launcher is designed to operate at a maximum of 150 PSIG.
The Receiver is equipped with an entrance section, check valve and discharge section.

Drawing of typical unit

The launcher is secured to the pipeline to be cleaned by a flange mated to an equal

size and rated flange on the exiting line or by welding it directly to the matching pipe.
Once the launcher is secured to the pipeline you are ready to launch pigs. Before any air
pressure is put on the launcher or pipeline the following steps are to be taken.

1.) Raise the handle that is in front of the swing bolt closure making sure no air
pressure is on the line. There is also a pressure gauge on the Inlet Section to
indicate if pressure is on the line.

***WARNING***
DO NOT ATTEMPT TO OPEN THE CLOSURE UNTIL THE PIPE OR VESSEL
HAS BEEN RELIEVED OF ALL PRESSURE. OPENING UNDER PRESSURE
MAY RESULT IN INJURY TO PERSONS AND DAMAGE TO EQUIPMENT.

2.) To open the closure, relieve the internal pressure or vacuum in the pipe on vessel.
Then loosen the bolts and swing them out to clear the closure. The closure is
mounted to be opened in a horizontal position.

3.) Once the closure is open the pig or pigs can be inserted into the over size section
of the launcher. The entrance is designed to accept varying lengths of pigs or a
number of them. The pig or pigs are pushed down the pipe to the eccentric
reducer to the pipe size section. Once the pigs are set into the pipeline size pipe,
the air pressure put behind them will propel them towards the check valve.
4.) To close the T-Bolt hinged closure, first inspect the O-ring and seating surface
and remove any foreign material, then close the head. All bolts should be swung
into place and tightened. The bolts should be tightened in an alternating sequence
in the same manner as flanges. (Use all bolts)

The recommended torque, for operating conditions, for each size is shown in the
following table:

BOLT SIZE RECOMMENDED TORQUE (FT – IBS)

1/2 20
5/8 40
3/4 65
7/8 100
1 – 1/8 225

DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN

5.) Once the closure is properly tightened, lower the handle in front of the closure
shutting off the exhaust valve.

6.) Open the inlet valve and put pressure behind the pig or pigs. Once the pressure is
equal or greater than the down stream pressure, the check valve can be opened
easily. ( 4” thru 20” manual operation, 24” and above are air activated)
7.) Once the pigs have cleared the check valve, close it and apply pressure through
the valves on the discharge section.

8.) After the pigs are running down the pipeline with the check valve closed, the
loading process can be repeated.
9.) On opening and closing the closure inspect the “O” Ring each time to make sure
it is not damaged.
Grease the bolts periodically to make sure they thread freely.

Typical Problems
PIG LAUNCHER

1.) Check valve won’t open or hard to open.

a.) Air pressure is not equalized or exceeding pressure across Check Valve
with down stream pressure.
b.) Cut off air to pigs on down stream side or increase pressure in launching
section.

2.) Pigs will not pass through valve.

a.) Check length of pig.
b.) Pig length should be at least 1 and ½ time longer than the diameter of the
pipe from sealing surface to sealing surface.
c.) Swabs of light density may be compressing to less than desired length.
Run two or more pigs back to back to increase length.

3.) Pressure on inlet section with check valve closed

a.) Check “O” Ring in check valve seat.
b.) Hold pressure on check valve closing position to help seat.

4.) Remove exhaust valve on air valve for air cylinder for air operated valves.
