Grammar Practice: Verb patterns and Future Forms
VERB PATTERNS

I. Common Verbs Followed by the Gerunds (Verb + ing)

II. Common Verbs Followed by the Infinitive (To + Verb)

Ex: I have been jobless for ages, so I can’t afford to go abroad for my holiday.

III. Verbs Followed by Objects and the Infinitive (Verb + Object + to + Verb)

advise challenge encourage get need persuade require want


allow choose expect help order promise teach warn
ask convince forbid hire pay remind tell wish
cause enable force invite permit request would like urge

Ex: My parents always encourage me to work hard for the exams.

Note: The verbs in Italics can also be followed by the Infinitive without an object.
Ex: - My boss expects me to perform the job well for the sake of the company.
- I have been working really hard, so I expect to pass the exam with flying color.

IV. Common Verbs Followed by the Gerund or the Infinitive

Ex: I can’t stand staying at home all day. (OR) I can’t stand to stay at home all day.
Note: The verbs in Italics can be followed by the gerund or the infinitive, but there is a big different in
meaning.

IV. Present Continuous and Going to


In many situations you can use either the present continuous or going to. In the following sentences, cross
out the present continuous where it is not possible because it is not something we can arrange.

1- Paula is going to become / is becoming a specialist in heart surgery when she finishes her training.
2- I am going to have / am having a party on Saturday. Would you like to come?
3- I am really going to enjoy / am really enjoying the concert tomorrow night.
4- My husband is going to see / is seeing the doctor on Friday.
5- What time is your sister’s plane going to leave / leaving?
6- Who are you going to meet / meeting for lunch today?
7- One day I am going to meet / am meeting the girl of my dreams.
8- Peter keeps telling us he is going to make / is making a million pounds before he’s forty.
9- We are going to spend / are spending the holidays with some friends from Canada.
10- When are you going to learn / learning some table manners?
