RECTILINEAR MOTIONS

Horizontal Motion

SITUATION – The cars A and B travel on a level road in the same direction at
a speed of 90 kph and 100 kph respectively. B is 80 m ahead of A when brakes
are applied on B causing it to decelerate at a rate of 2 m/s2.
1. In what time will A overtake B? Ans. 10.44 sec
2. How far will car B travel until he is overtaken by A? Ans. 181 m
3. How far will car A travel until he overtakes B? Ans. 261 m

SITUATION – Two cars A and B have a velocity of 25 m/sec in the same


direction. A is 73.5 m behind B when the brakes are applied to car B, causing
it to decelerate at a constant rate of 3 m/sec^2.
4. In what time will A overtake B? Ans. 7 seconds
5. How far will car A travel? Ans. 175 meters
6. How far will car B travel? Ans. 101.5 meters

SITUATION – An automobile moving at a constant velocity of 15 m/sec passes a


gasoline station. Two seconds later, another automobile leaves the gasoline
station and accelerates at the constant rate of 2 m/sec^2.
7. How soon will the second automobile overtake the first? Ans. 16.7 sec.
8. Compute the distance traveled by the first car? Ans. 280.5 m
9. Compute the distance traveled by the second car? Ans. 278.89 m

SITUATION – Two trains are running in the same direction on two parallel
tracks. The trains are 85 m and 65 m, respectively and run at 120 kph and 240
kph. If the trail end of the first train is 210 m ahead of the front end of
the second train.
10. Determine the time required for the front end of the second train to
reach the tail of the end of the first train. Ans. 6.3 sec
11. Determine the total distance traveled by the second train from the
initial position when it has completely overtaken the first train. Ans.
720 m
12. Determine the distance traveled by the first train from the initial
position until both ends of the two trains abreast each other. Ans. 295 m

SITUATION – Cars A and B approached each other on a straight road from points
460 m apart. A has an initial speed of 70 kph and is decelerating at the rate
of 0.40 m/s2. B has an initial speed of 20 kph and is accelerating at the rate
of 0.30 m/s2.
13. At what time will the cars be 200 m apart from each other? Ans. 10.63
sec
14. Determine the velocity of A at this instant. Ans. 54.68 kph
15. At what time will the two cars meet each other? Ans. 19.13 sec

16. A driver traveling at 50 mph is 80 m from a wall ahead. If the driver


applies the brakes immediately (perception time is 2 seconds) and begins
slowing the vehicle at 10 m/sec^2 (decelerating), find the distance from
the stopping point to the wall. Ans. 10.28 m

17. From a speed of 60 kph. A train decelerates at the rate of 2 m/min^2


along the path. How far in meters will it travel after 14 minutes? Ans.

20 kph along a level road with Car A 150 m ahead of Car B. Car A

19. Cars A and B are traveling in the same direction at the same speed of
70 kph along a level road. Car A is 150 m ahead of B. Car A decelerates at
the rate of 2 m/sec^2. From this instant up to the time B overtakes A, how
far has B travelled? Ans. 238.14 m

20. A driver travelling at 50 mph sees a wall at a certain distance ahead.


The driver applies the brakes immediately (perception time is 3 seconds)
and begins slowing the vehicle at 6 m/sec^2 (decelerating). If the
distance from the stopping point to the wall is 12 m, how far was the car
from the wall upon perception? Ans. 120.74 m

21. From a speed of 85 kph, a car decelerates at the rate of 10m/min/sec


along a straight road. Determine the distance travelled at the end of 30
sec. Ans. 633.15 m

SITUATION – Two automobile A and B are approaching each other in adjacent


highway lanes. At t = 0 sec, A and B are 1 km apart, their speeds are VA =
110 kph and VB = 60 kph and they are at points P and Q respectively. Knowing that
A passes point Q, 40 sec after B was there and that B passes point P, 42 sec
after A was there.
22. Determine the acceleration of A. Ans. -0.2778 m/s^2
23. Determine the time when they pass each other. Ans. 20.89 sec
24. Determine the speed of B when they pass each other. Ans. 85.52 kph

Vertical Motion

SITUATION – A stone is thrown vertically upward and returns to earth in 10


sec.
25. What was its initial velocity? Ans. 49.05 m/s
26. How high did it go? Ans. 122.63 m
27. At what time did it travel until it reaches the highest point? Ans. 5
sec.

SITUATION – A stone is thrown upward from the ground with a velocity of 15


m/sec. One second later, another stone is thrown vertically upward with a
velocity of 30 m/sec.
28. When will the stones be at the same level? Ans. 1.4 sec
29. How far above the ground will the stones be at the same level? Ans.
11.4 m
30. Determine the time the second stone travelled until the stones are at
the same level. Ans. 0.4 sec

SITUATION – A ball is dropped from the top of a tower 80 ft high at the same
instant that a second ball is thrown upward from the ground with an initial
velocity of 40 fps.

SITUATION – A ball is dropped freely from a balloon which is ascending at a


rate of 3 m/s and is being accelerated upward at the rate of 1.0 m/s2. At the
instant the ball was released, the balloon was 100 m above the ground.

47. What is the velocity of impact of the ball when it strikes the ground?
