ASSERTION – REASONING QUESTIONS

In the following questions, a statement of Assertion (A) is followed by a statement of


Reason (R). Choose the correct answer out of the following choices.
A. Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.
B. Both A and R are true but R is not the correct explanation of A.
C. A is true but R is false.
D. A is false but R is true.

Chapter 1 – Sets

1. Assertion (A): Let A and B be two sets having 3 and 6 elements respectively. Then, the
minimum number of elements that (A ∪ B) can have is 6.
Reason (R): If A ⊂ B, then n(A ∪ B) = n(B).

2. Assertion (A): The symmetric difference of A = {1, 2, 3} and B = {3, 4, 5} is {1, 2, 4, 5}.
Reason (R): The symmetric difference of A and B is given by (A – B) ∩ (B – A)

Chapter 2 – Relations & functions

3. Assertion (A): The domain of the function f(x) = x2 −8x+12 is R.
Reason (R): Domain of a function f(x) is the set of all values of x for which f(x) is
defined.

4. Assertion (A): Let R be the relation defined as R = {(x, y): x + 2y ≤ 7, x, y ∈ N}. Then
range of R is {1, 2, 3}
Reason (R): Range of a relation is the set of all first elements in the ordered pairs when
represented in the roster form.

Reason (R): cos 2x = 1 – 2sin2x

6. Assertion (A): If cot(α + β) = 0, then the value of sin(α + 2β) is always sin α.
Reason (R): cos(x + y) = cos x cos y − sin x sin y, sin 2x = 2 sin x cos x , cos 2x = cos 2 x −
sin2 x

Reason (R): Conjugate of a complex number z = (x + iy) is (x – iy) and denoted by z̅.

Reason (R): If a ≤ |x – k| ≤ b ⇒ –b ≤ x – k ≤ b and –a ≥ x – k ≥ a

11. Assertion (A): The number of ways in which 4 prizes can be distributed among 5
students, when no student gets more than one prize is 4!
Reason (R): Number of ways of arranging r objects in n positions is nPr

with y-axis is √3x − y + 2 − √3 = 0.

with the x-axis is given by: (y – y1) = tan θ (x – x1)

Reason (R): Equation of directrix of the parabola y2 = 4ax is given by y = –a

20. Assertion (A): Length of the latus-rectum of the hyperbola 16x2 – 9y2 = 144 is 32/3.
Reason (R): Eccentricity of a hyperbola is given by: e = c/a where c = √a2 + b 2 .

21. Assertion (A): Distance of a point p(–4, 3, 5) from z-axis is 5.


Reason (R): Distance of a point (x1, y1, z1) from z-axis is z1.
