EQUATIONS of
Math Quadratic
Functions
9 Given zeros
First Quarter – Week 7:

Teacher : Jasmin A. Angie

Learning Competency:
Determines the equations of a quadratic
function given: (a) a table of values (b) graph,
and (c) zeros. M9AL-Ij-1

Objectives:
1.Find the equations of a quadratic function
given:
(a) Zeros
b) Graph
Review: Let’s have a Group Activity:

The x-coordinates of the points of intersection of the

parabola and the x-axis are the zeroes of the quadratic
function if it exists.
Graphically, these are the intercepts of the graph of a
quadratic function. An x-intercept is a point on the graph
that intersects the x-axis.
How will the points on the parabola, particularly the x-
intercepts or the zeroes of the function, help in determining
the equation of the quadratic function represented by the
parabola?
Review: Find the zeros given the equation.

1. y = x 2 + x – 2
2. y = 3x 2 –14x + 8

Example: Methods If the graphs representing quadratic
function y = ax2 + bx + c is given, the
equation representing the graph can
1. be determined given any of the
following conditions:
a. The x-intercepts and a point on the
parabola for graphs where the
coordinates of the vertex are not
integers.
b. A vertex and a point on the
parabola
c. Three points on the parabola none
of which is an x-intercepts nor a
vertex.
Example: Step 1. Find the zeros(x – intercepts, if
SOLN 1: exists or integral value)
intercept
Step 1. The zeros are -2 and 1:
method
Step 2. If x = x1 and x = x2 are the x-
1. intercepts, then (x – x1) and (x – x2) are
factors of the equation of quadratic
function. Thus, y = a (x – x1) and (x – x2)
Step 2. If x = -2 and x = 1 are the x-
intercepts, then (x + 2) and (x – 1) are
factors of the equation of quadratic
function. Thus, y = a (x + 2) (x -1)
Example:
Step 3. Find the value of a.
SOLN 1:
Step 3. Use other point on the
intercept
graph. Let (0, -2) as other point.
method
1. Substitute x = 0 and y = –2 of
the equation of quadratic function
in y = a (x + 2) (x – 1)
-2 = a(0 + 2) (0 – 1)
-2 = -2a
-2a = -2
a=1
Substitute a = 1 in equation y = a (x + 2) (x – 1)
y =1(x + 2) (x – 1) or y =(x + 2) (x – 1)
Example: Step 1. Find vertex and a point on the
SOLN 2: parabola
1.
Step 1. The vertex are not integral
Example: Step 3. Find any three points on the
SOLN 3: graph that are integral.
1.
Find any 3 points are the zeros/x-
intercept and y – intercept .
Example: Step 1. Find the zeros(x – intercepts, if
SOLN 1: exists or integral value)

2. No x-intercept
Example: Step 1. Find vertex and a point on the
SOLN 2: parabola
1.
Step 1. The vertex are not integral
Example: Step 1. Find vertex and a point on the
SOLN 2: parabola Step 1. The vertex is (-2, 2)
and the other point is (0, 6)
2. Substitute h = -2, k = 2, x = 0 and
y = 6 in equation of quadratic function
y = a (x – h)2 + k
6 = a (0 + 2)2 + 2
6 – 2 = 4a
4a = 4
a=1
Substitute a = 1 in equation y = a (x + 2)2 + 2
y = (x + 2)2 + 2
Determine the equation of quadratic function given
the graph.
Assignment
Solve each quadratic function and identify the vertex, domain, range, and
the opening of the graph. State whether the vertex is a minimum or
maximum point. Write the equation of its axis of symmetry.
