QUESTION 2 (Start on a new page.)

A tow truck of mass 1 500 kg is pulling a car of mass 950 kg along a straight horizontal
road. The car is attached to the tow truck by means of an inextensible tow bar of
negligible mass, inclined at 30° to the horizontal, as shown on the diagram below. The
engine of the tow truck provides a constant driving force of 7 800 N. The tow truck
experiences a constant kinetic frictional force of 3 500 N. The tow truck and the car
move at a CONSTANT VELOCITY.

Ignore the rotation effect of the wheels and the air friction.

2.1 State Newton’s Second Law of motion in words. (2)

2.2 Draw a labelled free-body diagram showing all forces acting on the
tow truck (5)

2.3 Calculate the:

2.3.1 Tension in the tow bar connecting the tow truck and the car (3)

2.3.2 The coefficient of kinetic friction between the car and the road (5)

2.4 The graph below represents the relationship between frictional force
experienced by the car and the horizontal component of tension in the
tow bar.

2.4.1 Write down the value of X on the graph above. (1)

QUESTION 3 (Start on a new page.)

A hot-air balloon is moving vertically upwards at a constant speed of 14 m.s-1. A

binocular is accidentally dropped from the balloon when it is at a height of 100 m
as shown on the diagram below. Ignore the effects of friction. TAKE THE
UPWARDS DIRECTION AS POSITIVE.

3.1 Define the term free fall. (2)

3.2 Calculate the:

3.2.1 Maximum height reached by the binocular above the ground (4)

3.2.2 Velocity of the binocular with which it strikes the ground (3)

3.2.3 Time it takes for the binocular to reach the ground (3)

3.3 Draw a sketch graph of position versus time for the entire motion of the
binocular. Take the ground as the zero position.
