QUESTION 1

a) Given the following probability distribution;

X 1 2 3 4 5
P(X= x) 0.3 0.2 0.04 0.03 0.43

Determine; (a) E(X) (b) Var (X) (c) E (10X) (d) E (12- X) (e) E {(X- E(X)) 2} (f) E(Y)
where Y= 12 + 13X

b) Consider the formula P(X) = , x=3, 4, 5. Is P(X) a probability Mass Function? If so,
compute the expected value of X and its Variance.

c) Prove that the variance of a discrete random variable has the following properties:
i) Var (aX) = a2var(X)
ii) Var (a) = 0

QUESTION 2

Grades for 52 statistics students from a previous test are summarised below:
Intervals Frequency
30- 40 2
40- 50 4
50- 60 6
60- 70 10
70- 80 15
80- 90 10
90- 100 5

a) Using the frequency distribution, calculate:

i) the mean and interpret the answer.
ii) the standard deviation
iii) the variance
iv) the median
v) the Mode
vi) the mean absolute deviation
vii) the lower quartile
viii) the coefficient of variation and interpret the answer.
ix) the upper quartile
x) the Pearson’s Coefficient of Skewness and state the shape of the
distribution
QUESTION 3

a) A random variable X is such that XBin (n, p) and E(X) =2 and the Var(X) = . Find
the values of n and p.

b) The mean number of bacteria per ml of a liquid is known to be 4. Assuming that the
number of bacteria follows a Poisson distribution, find the probability that in 2ml of
liquid there will be;
i) No bacteria
ii) 3 or more bacteria
iii) Less than 3 bacteria

c) Five percent of the bolts produced by a machine are defective. If 20 bolts are chosen
at random, determine the following probabilities.

i) Exactly three are defective

ii) More than five are defective.
iii) At least two are defective
iv) At most 4 are defective.

QUESTION 4

a) Suppose events E and F partition a sample space, S, where E and F have probabilities
P (E) =0.4, P (F) =0.6. If D is an event such that P (D/E) =0.1, P (F/D’) = 0.2, find the
probabilities P (E/D) and P (F/D).

b) The probability that it will be sunny tomorrow is . If it is sunny, the probability that

Susan play tennis is , . If it is not sunny, the probability that Susan plays tennis is .
Find the probability that Susan plays tennis tomorrow.

c) Three girls Jane, Anne and Musonda, pack biscuits in a factory. From the batch
allocated to them; Jane packs 45%, Anne packs 20% and Musonda packs 35%. The
probability that Jane breaks some of the biscuits in a packet is 0.7, and the
respective probabilities for Anne and Musonda are 0.2 and 0.1. What is the
probability that a packet with broken biscuits found by the Checker was packed by
i) Jane
ii) Anne
iii) Musonda
QUESTION 5

a) A bag contains 10 balls of which 7 are green and 3 are white. A ball is picked at
random from the bag and its colour is noted. The ball is not replaced; a second ball is
then picked out. Find the probability that;
i) The first ball is green
ii) The first ball is green and the second ball is white
iii) The balls are of different colours.

b) Given that nP5= 6  nP4. Find the value of n.
