First name: _____________ Last name: ______________

Number Theory 1

1. Factors

A whole number that divides exactly into another whole number is called a factor of that
number.

Note: If a number can be expressed as a _______________ of two whole numbers, then the
whole numbers are called ______________ of that number.

Usually, most numbers have an ____________ number of factors. Why?

Ex 1. Find the factors of 12, 18 and 20.

Ex 2. Find the factors of 4, 9, 16.

In Class Practice
List all factors of the following numbers.
a) 98 b) 97 c) 169 d) 192

2. Divisibility Rules

“Divisible By” means “If you divide one number by another, and the result is a whole number.”

When a number is a factor of another number, we can also say it is that the number is divisible
by the factor.

The Divisibility Rules

Divisibility Tests Example

2

10

In Class Practice
Using the divisibility tests, find which numbers from 2 to 10 are factors of the following:
a) 926 b) 1420 c) 7848 d) 22176

3. Prime and Composite Numbers

Any whole number greater than 1 is either prime or composite.

A Prime Number can be divided evenly only by _____________, or _______________.

Example 1: In what ways can 7 be divided into?

You could have one group of 7, or seven groups of 1.

A Composite Number can be divided evenly by numbers other than 1 or itself.

Example 2: 6 can be divided evenly by 2, or by 3 (as well as by 1 or 6):

6=1×6
6=2×3

Factorization vs Prime Factorization

Factorization is the process of rewriting a number as a ______________ of 2 or more

______________.

Example 3: Factorization of 12:

1 × 12 = 12 2 × 6 = 12 3 × 4 = 12

What about 2 × 2 × 3 = 12?

Prime Factorization is the process of rewriting a number as a ______________ of 2 or more

__________________________.

Factor Tree
Example 4: We can use a factor tree to express 90 as a product of prime numbers as illustrated
below.

Note: Write prime numbers in ascending order

Meritus Academy Math G7 Curriculum - Class 1: Handout

In class Practice
Prime Factorization using factor tree
a) 245 b) 456 c) 123 d) 328

Example 5: Express 210 as a product of prime numbers.

In class Practice
Express the following as a product of prime numbers.
a) 451 b) 247 c) 160 d) 309

4. Exponents

Rewriting powers with a different base

Ex 1. Rewrite 645 as a base 2

5. Base-10 System

The base-10 system is also known as the ______________ system.

A number can be expressed as a ____________ of each digit times _______________________.

Ex 1. Express 427 as a sum of powers of 10.

427 = 400 + 20 + 7
= 4×100 + 2×10 + 7×1
= 4×102 + 2×101 + 7×100

In class Practice
Express the following numbers as a sum of powers of 10.
a) 251 b) 901 c) 40320 d) 5210201

Simplify each expression as a number.

a) (5 × 102) + (7 × 101) + (1 × 100) b) (3 × 105) + (1 × 103) + (8 × 102) + (3 × 100)
