Ad Hoc and Wireless Network

Adhoc Network Defina on

An Ad Hoc network is a type of wireless network that operates without relying on any fixed infrastructure such
as routers, access points, or centralized servers. In an Ad Hoc network, each device (node) is capable of both
sending and receiving data, as well as rou ng data for other nodes. This allows the network to be dynamic and
self-organizing, making it suitable for environments where infrastructure is unavailable or imprac cal.

OR

An Ad Hoc network is a decentralized wireless network that operates without a fixed infrastructure. In this type
of network, nodes communicate directly with each other and relay data in a coopera ve manner, allowing for
dynamic and self-organizing communica on.

Characteris cs of Ad Hoc Networks

1. Infrastructure-less: No fixed infrastructure like routers or access points is required.

2. Dynamic Topology: Nodes can move freely, causing frequent changes in the network structure.
3. Mul -hop Communica on: Nodes relay data for each other to enable communica on over longer
distances.
4. Decentralized Control: There is no central authority; each node par cipates equally in network
management.
5. Self-configuring: Nodes automa cally adjust to network changes, allowing for quick deployment and
reconfigura on.
6. Limited Range: Nodes have a restricted communica on range, relying on nearby nodes for rou ng.
7. Energy Constraints: Ba ery-powered devices require energy-efficient communica on protocols.
8. Peer-to-peer Connec vity: Direct communica on between nodes without external infrastructure.
9. Scalability: Can support many nodes but faces challenges with rou ng and bandwidth as the number
increases.
10. Security Issues: The decentralized nature makes the network more vulnerable to security threats.

Features of Ad Hoc Networks

1. Infrastructure-less: No need for fixed infrastructure like routers or access points.

2. Scalability: Can adapt to an increasing or decreasing number of nodes.
3. Self-organizing: Nodes automa cally configure and manage themselves.
4. Mul -hop Communica on: Data is relayed through mul ple nodes to reach the des na on.
5. Mobility Support: The network can adjust as nodes move or change posi on.
6. Peer-to-peer Communica on: Direct communica on between nodes without relying on centralized
servers.
7. Cost-effec ve: No infrastructure costs, making it inexpensive for deployment.
8. Robustness: The network can con nue func oning even if some nodes fail.
9. Quick Deployment: Easy and fast to set up, ideal for emergency situa ons.

Applica ons of Ad Hoc Networks

1. Military Communica ons:

 Used in ba lefield scenarios for secure, infrastructure-less communica on.

2. Disaster Recovery:

 Deployed in areas affected by natural disasters where tradi onal infrastructure is damaged or
unavailable.

3. Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANETs):

 Used for vehicle-to-vehicle communica on to improve traffic management and road safety.
4. Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs):

 Applied in environmental monitoring, agriculture, and industrial surveillance to collect data from
remote sensors.

5. Mobile Device Communica on:

 Used for peer-to-peer communica on between smartphones and other devices in areas without
mobile networks.

6. Smart Environments:

 Used in smart homes and smart ci es for inter-device communica on in Internet of Things (IoT)
setups.

7. Aerial Ad Hoc Networks:

 Deployed in drones or unmanned aerial vehicles for surveillance, disaster management, or

delivery services.
