General Objective: Students will adapt a wide range of sentence structures according to
context , distinguishing between SJE and JC.

Specific Objectives: Students should be able to:


● grasp the concept of construction shift and equivalent sentences.
● reconstruct sentences by applying relevant grammatical rules.
● develop critical thinking skills through the uses of construction shift and
equivalent sentences.

Content Summary: Construction means to build, create or recreate.


Shift means to move or a slight change in position.
Construction shift is to recreate the sentence, or shift phrases in the
Sentence, while retaining the original meaning of the sentence.
It is also a means of paraphrasing.

It is important to understand what happens in a sentence when you express


It using a different tense, person or number or when it is changed from the
Active voice to the passive voice.

Equivalent sentence expresses the same meaning as another sentence. The


Wording is different but the same idea is sustained. It improves one’s
Paraphrasing skills and assists in summarizing.
For purposes of mastering the skills on the CSEC Paper 1 one should pay
Attention to the following as the examine the original sentence -
● The meaning of words
● The way words are used
● What changes are made to the arrangement of words
● Changes in qualifying words such as ‘only’, or in connectives such
as ’and’, ‘because’ and ‘as a result of’
● Generalizations
● Punctuation and how it affects meaning

Procedure:
Introduction: Students will explain the meaning of the words 'construction’ and
‘Shift’. Following this they will attempt to explain the term
‘Construction shift’. The responses will be written on whiteboard
They will be discussed and clarified.

● An activity will follow in which students will be given a number of


sentences (pairs of sentences will express similar ideas) which they
will examine and explain what they discovered about them. They
will identify the similarities and differences in the pairs of
sentences.
● The students will be directed to a video on Construction shift. They
will share ideas on the topic after watching the video.

● The class will work together on various items to ensure that


students understand the concept as they practice using the skill.

● Students will watch the video on Equivalent sentences for


Homework. They will share information with the class in the next
session - Relatedness to Construction shift .

● The class will practice exercises on equivalent sentences in pairs


and share with the class. Corrections will be made and the Teacher
will provide clarification where necessary as well as additional
information.

Culminating Activities: 1. Students will complete multiple choice exercises from their
Textbooks. (A Comprehensive English Course, pages 70, 81-82
AND 204-205)

Equivalent sentences: 127 - 128, 203, 215-216, 228-229, 248-249

2. Students will summarize a paragraph. They
will incorporate the skills of Construction shift/Equivalent
sentences in their summary.
