TIME DOMAIN RESPONSE OF SECOND ORDER SYSTEM USING MATLAB

4.1 Objective 4.2 Apparatus required 4.3 Theory 4.4 Procedure 4.5 Observation table 4.6 Result
4.7 Precautions 4.8 Pre-Requisite Questions 4.9 Post- Requisite Questions

4.1 OBJECTIVE: To determine time domain response of a second order underdamped system
for step input and obtain performance parameters using MATLAB.

4.2 APPARATUS REQUIRED: Computer with MATLAB

4.3 THEORY: It is an equation or plot which describes the behavior of a system & contains
much information about it with respect to time response specification as overshooting, rise
time, delay time, steady state etc. Time response is formed by Transient response & steady
state response.

Fig.(4.1) Time domain response of second order system.

• Delay time (Td): It the time required for the response to rise 50% of its final value.
• Rise Time (Tr): It the time required for the response to rise 0% to 90% of its final value
• Peak Time(Tp): It the time required for the overdamped step response to reach the peak
of the time response(Yp) or the overshoot.
• Settling Time (Ts): The time required for the step response to settle down and stay
within a specified tolerance of the final value. The tolerance is usually taken as either 2
or 3 percent.

• Peak overshoot or Percent Overshoot (Mp or PO%): It the normalized difference

between the response peak value & steady value. This characteristic is not found in first
order system & found in higher one for overdamped step response. It is defined as:

• Steady State error: It is the difference between the input and the output for a prescribed
test input as t → ∞. It is a measure of system accuracy.
ess = lim e(t ) = lim[ r (t ) − c(t )]
4.4 PROCEDURE:
• Consider any second order equation.
• write the program on MATLAB and execute.
• Note the time domain specifications from MATLAB response.
• Calculate the time domain specifications theortically.
• Verify the theoritical calculations with MATLAB results.
• Take the print out of MATLAB response and attach in record.
Example:
16
C (S ) =
Consider the second order equation: s + 1.6S + 16
