While at my mother's, I have been helping to take care of my very ill grandma who as Alzheimer's and
severe arthritis and my aunt who has Down syndrome.
9, 10, 11, 12 (still participating) | 26 weeks per year | 14 - 21 hours per week
I have been working with this organization since I was in seventh grade. It is about helping kids with
autism and spending time with them. I would help to put together events for the kids then I would be
partnered with a young child. One day every month
I learned to be more patient and understanding.

My parents had separated when I was a baby and right afterward they went to
court fighting over custody, but that wasn’t even the worst part: they spent five
years in court. I remember walking into my dad’s office and seeing court dates on
his calendar, or I would hear my parents on the phone and they would be yelling at
each other. Being a young kid having to listen to those conversations made me
fearful of my parents even being in the same room with each other, which is why
many times I blamed myself, and I didn’t even want the Honor awards I had earned
in school because I knew it would mean both my parents would be present – I was
always scared something would happen.
I knew there would be more challenges I would have to overcome with my parents;
however, one of my greatest challenges has been having to watch as one of the
most important people to me losing life’s battle – my maternal grandma – who was
first diagnosed with breast cancer requiring a double mastectomy, then dyspnea
necessitating an oxygen tank, and now Alzheimer’s followed most recently by a
heart attack resulting in pacemaker surgery. Having to see my grandmother every
day and watch as she slowly forgets who I am has caused me so much pain. I
know my life won’t be the same because even through all the things I went through
with my parents I had always known I would have her love and she was always
there for me, but now I know I won’t be able to have that with her anymore.
To make matters worse, seeing my dad suffering in pain and slowly becoming more
crippled over the years due to his rare medical condition has caused him to
sometimes experience bouts of depression. It deeply hurts me having to hear
about and watch how much pain my dad’s in everyday because of his health, and I
feel powerless to help him.
Experiences like these have caused me to be very closed off at home, so much so
that I would lock myself in my room and just watch my superhero cartoons. I
mostly gravitated towards Batman, the animated series, because I related to him
the most. As a young child, Batman experienced severe familial trauma no one
should ever have to go through – I can relate. I thought that over time things would
get better but they haven’t, which is why I would watch Batman as I saw a bit of
myself in him because like him, I have continued to push myself to be successful,
work hard, and that one day it would pay off. Having to go through these
experiences with my parents drove me to always do my best, to never give up, and
push myself to rise to any challenge.
Batman has been the one constant in my life who has taught me so much about
overcoming my fears, believing in others, having hope, being caring, humble, and
loyal but I think the most important thing I learned was being determined and
having the willpower to be self-motivated. Without these qualities, I don’t think I
would have come out the other end so strong, which is something that gives me
great pride.
Short response I have grown up in a diverse crowd due to my multi-cultural and racial backgrounds
and the schools I’ve attended. I have grown up with a white father and a Hispanic
mother which as provided me with great experiences, such as speaking some
Spanish at home that I cherish as a part of who I am. I also have a multi- religious
background because my father is Jewish and my mother is Catholic, where I have
learned to celebrate both and make them a part of who I am. Other things that
make me unique are my backgrounds in music because I played piano for three
years and being tested gifted at a young age. My school, Cleveland High School is a
very diverse school not just the program I’m in but the school in general. With this
diversity I have learned how to be inclusive, where I have learned how to include
and have a better understanding of different racial and cultural backgrounds. By
having different experiences with these groups it has helped to shape me as a
person, adding to the diversity of the experiences of of the students at my school.
