ELECTROMAGNETIC THEORY
Fall 2023
Homework #1
Deadline:
Problem 1:
Three vectors drawn from a common point are given as follows:
𝑨 = −4𝒂1 − 𝑚𝒂2 − (𝑚 − 1)𝒂3
𝑩 = (𝑚 + 1)𝒂1 + 𝒂2 − 3𝒂3
𝑪 = 𝒂1 + (𝑚 − 1)𝒂2 + 4𝒂3
Find 𝑚 for each of the following cases:
a. 𝑨 is perpendicular to 𝑩
b. 𝑩 is parallel to 𝑪
c. 𝑨, 𝑩 and 𝑪 lie in the same plane.

Problem 2:
Find the expression for the unit vector normal to the curve 4𝑥 = 𝑦 2 = 4𝑧 3 at the point (1,2,1)
and having no components along the line 𝑥 = 𝑦 = 𝑧

Problem 3:

Figure 1

Infinite plane sheets of charge lie in the planes 𝑧 = −2, 𝑧 = 0 and 𝑧 = 2 with uniform surface
charge densities 𝜌𝑆1 , 𝜌𝑆2 and 𝜌𝑆3 respectively (Figure 1). Given that the resulting electric field
intensities at the points (4, 6, 1), (1, −4, −1) and (2, 8, 5) are 4𝑎𝑧 , 0 and 5𝑎𝑧 𝑉/𝑚 respectively,
find the following: (𝒂)𝜌𝑆1 , (𝒃)𝜌𝑆2 , (𝒄)𝜌𝑆3 and (𝒅)𝐄 𝑎𝑡 (−4,6, −3)

Problem 4:
Three infinite planes current sheets, each of a uniform current density, exist in the coordinate
planes of a Cartesian coordinate system. The magnetic flux density due to these current sheets
are given at three points as follows: at (1,4,2), 𝑩 = 𝐵0 (3𝒂𝑥 − 2𝒂𝑦 ); at (4, 2, −3), 𝑩 =
𝐵0 (𝒂𝑥 − 2𝒂𝑦 + 𝒂𝑧 ); at (1, −3, −2), 𝑩 = 𝐵0 (𝒂𝑥 + 2𝒂𝑦 − 𝒂𝑧 ). Find the magnetic flux density at
the following points:
a. (1, −2,3)
b. (−1,1,1)

Problem 5:
The forces experienced by a test charge q at a point in a region of electric and magnetic fields E
and B, respectively, are given as follows for three different velocities of the test charge, where
𝑣0 and 𝐸0 are constants.
𝐅1 = 𝑞𝐸0 (− 𝒂𝑥 + 2𝒂𝑦 ) for 𝒗1 = 𝑣0 𝒂𝑥
𝐅2 = 𝑞𝐸0 ( −2𝒂𝑥 + 𝒂𝑦 − 𝒂𝑧 ) for 𝒗2 = 𝑣0 𝒂𝑦
𝐅3 = 𝑞𝐸0 ( − 𝒂𝑥 + 2𝒂𝑦 ) for 𝒗3 = 𝑣0 𝒂𝑧
Find E and B at that point.
Hint: Apply Lorentz force equation for 𝑭𝟏 , 𝑭𝟐 and 𝑭𝟑 . Do the subtraction, ex: 𝑭𝟏 − 𝑭𝟐 and 𝑭𝟏 −
𝑭𝟑 to eliminate E and find B first. After that, substitute B to 𝑭𝟏 to find E
