Week 3 Challenge CFD Meshing On Turbocharger
Week 3 Challenge CFD Meshing On Turbocharger
Turbocharger
Objective:
For the given model, check for the geometrical errors to make appropriate volumes.
Create and assign PIDs as shown in the video. Perform surface mesh with the given
target lengths as per PIDs.
1. Blade stage-1 = 1 mm
2. Blade stage-2 = 1 mm
3. Impeller = 2 mm
4. Shaft rotor = 1 mm
5. Turbo casing = 5 mm
6. Compressor casing = 5 mm
7. Inlet casing cover = 5 mm
Perform Volumetric mesh for the required volumes as shown in the videos.
Write a detailed report on your surface meshing & Volume meshing process.
Steps on ANSA:
we have learned about volumetric meshing. Now in this challenge, the main purpose is: Topo
cleanup then surface meshing then control volume extraction then volumetric meshing.
2. Will do first topo cleanup on a very raw model. We can notice here that so many surfaces are
missing and also we can check the geometry from check window
We observe that a lot of topology errors i.e. single, triple cons and glitching surfaces are present
in the model.
After releasing the triple con we did topo
single cons poresent now we will apply topo to get triple con here
Now will resolve triple coon. Middle clicks and all
Checking one by one for so many cons in detail and also the errors associated with them
release(converts 1 triple coons into 2 double coons and 1 double coons into 2 single coons) and
topo(2 double coons into 1 triple coon and 2 single coons into 1double coon) are opposite in work

we can see
holes here
For every region do the same

4. Defining the PIDs:
We can solve this problem by meshing the PIDs that are direct in contact with neighbor different
sized meshes without applying length option to perimeters and macros
We can see the transition on both end edges
But inner surfaces of previous 2 surfaces not meshed so hide and check along with overlapping
surfaces
Meshing on 2D called shell and we need to convert shells into 3D ie Volume mesh
VOLUMETRIC MESHING:
We have to take care of which volumes are needed means fluid will flow through that and which are
not needed. It means the volume must have some thickness
we will keep 3 volumes only and delete others as they are material(parent geometry) ie thickness vol
not flow volume
right click and remesh
Conclusions:
1. The errors like single, double and triple cons are checked and resolved
2. PIDs are assigned to different parts of geometry
3. surfaces are generated with the given target mesh lengths. Then volumetric meshing is
performed for the volumed required successfully.
