COURSE OBJECTIVE
To impart basic concepts of computer architecture and organization,
To explain key skills of constructing cost-effective computer systems.
To familiarize the basic CPU organization.
To help students in understanding various memory devices.
To facilitate students in learning IO communication
Number Systems: Binary, Octal, Decimal and Hexadecimal Number Systems - Conversion from one base
to another base - Complements - Binary Arithmetic - Numeric and Character codes - Error Detection
Codes: Parity Bit, Odd Parity, Even Parity, and Parity Generator & Checker.
Basic definitions, axiomatic definition of Boolean Algebra, Basic Theorems and properties of Boolean
Algebra, Boolean functions, Canonical and Standard forms, Digital Logic Gates, K- Map method.
Computer types, Functional units, Basic operational concepts, Bus Structures, Multiprocessors and
Multicomputer, Instruction codes, Computer Registers, Instruction cycle, Input-Output and interrupt. Central
processing unit: Stack organization, Instruction Formats, Addressing Modes, Data Transfer and
Manipulation, Complex Instruction Set Computer (CISC), Reduced Instruction Set Computer (RISC), CISC
vs RISC.
Memory Hierarchy, Semiconductor Memories, RAM(Random Access Memory), Read Only Memory (ROM),
Types of ROM, Cache Memory, Performance considerations, Virtual memory, Paging, Secondary Storage,
RAID.
1/0 interface, Programmed IO, Memory Mapped IO, Interrupt Driven IO, and Direct Memory Access.
