COURSE OBJECTIVE
 To impart basic concepts of computer architecture and organization,
 To explain key skills of constructing cost-effective computer systems.
 To familiarize the basic CPU organization.
 To help students in understanding various memory devices.
 To facilitate students in learning IO communication

UNIT 1: NUMBER SYSTEM

Number Systems: Binary, Octal, Decimal and Hexadecimal Number Systems - Conversion from one base
to another base - Complements - Binary Arithmetic - Numeric and Character codes - Error Detection
Codes: Parity Bit, Odd Parity, Even Parity, and Parity Generator & Checker.

UNIT 2: BOOLEAN ALGEBRA AND LOGIC GATES

Basic definitions, axiomatic definition of Boolean Algebra, Basic Theorems and properties of Boolean
Algebra, Boolean functions, Canonical and Standard forms, Digital Logic Gates, K- Map method.

UNIT 3: STRUCTURE AND ORGANIZATION OF COMPUTERS

Computer types, Functional units, Basic operational concepts, Bus Structures, Multiprocessors and
Multicomputer, Instruction codes, Computer Registers, Instruction cycle, Input-Output and interrupt. Central
processing unit: Stack organization, Instruction Formats, Addressing Modes, Data Transfer and
Manipulation, Complex Instruction Set Computer (CISC), Reduced Instruction Set Computer (RISC), CISC
vs RISC.

UNIT 4: MEMORY SYSTEM

Memory Hierarchy, Semiconductor Memories, RAM(Random Access Memory), Read Only Memory (ROM),
Types of ROM, Cache Memory, Performance considerations, Virtual memory, Paging, Secondary Storage,
RAID.

UNIT 5: INPUT OUTPUT

1/0 interface, Programmed IO, Memory Mapped IO, Interrupt Driven IO, and Direct Memory Access.
