Sheet No. (5) Synchronous Generators (Alternators)

1) A three-phase, star-connected, 10 kVA, 230 V alternator has an armature resistance of 0.5 ohm per
phase and a synchronous reactance of 1.2 ohm per phase. Calculate the percent voltage regulation at
full load at power factors of (a) 0.8 lagging, (b) 0.8 leading, (c) Determine the power factor such that
the voltage regulation becomes zero on full load.

2) A three-phase, star-connected, 10 kVA, 400V 50Hz alternator has an armature resistance of 0.5 ohm/
phase and synchronous reactance of 10 ohm/phase. Determine its torque angle and voltage regulation
when it supplies rated load at 0.8 pf lagging.

3) A three-phase, star-connected, 1000 kVA, 3000 V, 50 Hz alternator produces a short-circuit current of

200 A and an open circuit voltage of 1040 V with the same field current of 40 A. If its armature has an
effective resistance of 0.2 ohm per phase, calculate the full-load percentage regulation of the machine
at a pf of 0.8 lagging.

4) A three-phase star connected 1200 kVA, 3300 V, 50 Hz, alternator has armature resistance of 0·25
ohm per phase. A field current of 40 A produces a short circuit current of 200 A and an open circuit
emf of 1100 V between lines. Calculate regulation on full load 0·8 power factor lagging.

5) A single-phase 60 kVA, 220 V, 50 Hz, alternator has an effective armature leakage reactance of 0·07
ohm and negligible armature resistance. Calculate the voltage induced in the armature when the
alternator is delivering rated current at a load power factor of 0·7 lagging.

6) A single-phase 100 kVA, 600V, 50 Hz alternator has effective armature resistance and leakage
reactance of 0·072 and 0·18 ohm respectively. At rated terminal voltage and kVA load, determine
internal induced emf at (i) unit p.f. (ii) 0·75 p.f. lagging; (iii) 0·75 p.f. leading.

7) A single-phase, 500 V, 50 Hz alternator produces a short-circuit current of 170 A and an open circuit
emf of 425 V when a field current of 15A passes through its field winding. If its armature has an
effective resistance of 0.2 ohm, determine its full-load regulation at unity pf and at 0.8 pf lagging.

8) A 600 V, 60 kVA, single-phase alternator has an effective armature resistance of 0.3 ohm. An exciting
current of 5 A produces an emf of 400 V on open circuit and an armature current of 200 A on short
circuit. Calculate:

i. The synchronous impedance and synchronous reactance.

ii. The full load regulation with 0.8 p.f. lagging.
9) A 200 kVA, 480 V, 50 Hz, Y-connected synchronous generator with a rated field current of 5 A was
tested, and the following data were taken:
i. VT,OC at the rated If was measured to be 540 V.
ii. IL,SC at the rated IF was found to be 300 A.
iii. When a dc voltage of 10 V was applied to two of the terminals, a current of 25 A was
measured.
Find the values of the armature resistance and the approximate synchronous reactance in ohms that
would be used in the generator model at the rated conditions.
10) A generator supplying a load, as shown in the figure. A second load is to be connected in parallel with
the first one. The generator has a no-load frequency of 61.0 Hz and a slope sp of 1 MW/Hz. Load 1
consumes a real power of 1000 kW at 0.8 PF lagging, while load 2 consumes a real power of 800 kW
at 0.707 PF lagging.
i. Before the switch is closed, what is the operating frequency of the system?
ii. After load 2 is connected, what is the operating frequency of the system?
iii. After load 2 is connected, what action could an operator take to restore the system frequency to
60 Hz?
