I WISH, IF ONLY
1. We use I WISH, IF ONLY + PAST SIMPLE to talk about something we want to be different in the
present
2. We use I WISH, IF ONLY + PAST PERFECT to express a regret about something that happened
or did not happen in the past.
I wish I hadn’t failed my exams. (I did fail my exams and now I am expressing a regret)
If only I hadn’t failed my exams.
3. We use I WISH, IF ONLY + WOULD when we have a desire or a wish for something to change or
for someone to change their behaviour
HAD BETTER
We use HAD + bare infinitive to give advice or to say what the best thing to do in a particular
situation is.
WOULD RATHER
1. We use WOULD RATHER + bare infinitive to talk about preference in the present and future
2. We use WOULD RATHER + bare perfect infinitive to talk about preference in the past
