I WISH, IF ONLY
1. We use I WISH, IF ONLY + PAST SIMPLE to talk about something we want to be different in the
present

I wish we were still on holidays. (We’re back in the office now)


I wish we had a new car. (The car we have in the present is old and breaks down very often)

We don’t use I WISH and IF ONLY with a present tense.

2. We use I WISH, IF ONLY + PAST PERFECT to express a regret about something that happened
or did not happen in the past.

I wish I hadn’t failed my exams. (I did fail my exams and now I am expressing a regret)
If only I hadn’t failed my exams.

3. We use I WISH, IF ONLY + WOULD when we have a desire or a wish for something to change or
for someone to change their behaviour

If only she would talk about her problems.


I wish you would train harder.

HAD BETTER
We use HAD + bare infinitive to give advice or to say what the best thing to do in a particular
situation is.

You’d better be home before 8.

WOULD RATHER
1. We use WOULD RATHER + bare infinitive to talk about preference in the present and future

I would rather play golf than go shopping.

2. We use WOULD RATHER + bare perfect infinitive to talk about preference in the past

I would rather have stayed at home.

When the subject of WOULD RATHER is different from the subject of the following verb, we use
the following

1. We use WOULD RATHER + past tense to talk about preference in the present and future

I’d rather John played golf today.

2. We use WOULD RATHER + past perfect to talk about preference in the past

I’d rather Sarah and Patrick had stayed at home yesterday.
