LINEAR EQUATIONS
NOTES:
1. An equation of the type ax +b=0 , where a ≠ 0, is called a linear equation in the variable x .
2. A number α is a root (or solution) of the equation ax +b=0 if and only if aα +b=0.
3. To solve an equation, you can do any of the following:
add the same number or expression to both sides.
subtract the same or expression from both sides.
multiply both sides by the same non-zero number or expression.
divide both sides by the same non-zero number or expression.
transpose a term from one side to the other side by changing its sign.
ax +b m
to reduce the equations of the type = into linear equations we use cross
cx +d n
multiplication.
a c
If = , then ad =bc (cross multiplication)
b d
4. While solving word (or applied) problems involving one unknown, we first have to write an
equation corresponding to the given statement and then solve this equation to find the value
of unknown.
