In 2001, historian Roger Ekirch of Virginia Tech published a seminal paper, drawn from 16 years of research, revealing a wealth of
historical evidence that humans used to sleep in two distinct chunks. Roger Ekirch says a 1595 engraving by Jan Saenredam is
evidence of activity at night. His book "At Day's Close: Night in Times Past." published four years later unearths more than 500 reference
to a segmented sleep pattern in diaries court records, medical boob and literature, from Homer's Odyssey to an anthropological account
of modern tribes in Nigeria.

Ekirch found that references to the first and second sleep started to disappear during the late 17th century. This started among the
urban upper classes in northern Europe and over the course of the next 200 years filtered down to the rest of western society. By the
1920s the idea of a first and second sleep had receded entirely from our social consciousness. He attributes the initial shift to
improvements in street lighting, domestic lighting and a surge in coffee houses - which were sometimes open all night. As the night
became a place for legitimate activity and as that activity increased the length of time people could dedicate to rest dwindled.

Most investigators concur that certain facial expressions suggest the same emotions all people. Moreover, people in diverse cultures
recognise the emotions manifested by the facial expressions. In classic research Paul Ekman took photographs of people exhibiting the
emotions of anger, disgust, fear, happiness and sadness. He then asked people around the world to indicate what emotions were being
depicted in them. Those queried ranged from European college students to members of the Fore, a tribe that dwells in the New Guinea
highlands. All groups, including the Fore who had almost no contact with Western culture, agreed on the portrayed emotions. The Fore
also displayed familiar facial expressions when asked how they would respond if they were the characters in the stories that called for
basic emotional response. Ekman and his colleagues more recently obtained similar results in a study of ten cultures in which
participants were permitted to report that multiple emotions were shown by facial expressions. The participants generally agreed on
which two emotions were being shown and on which emotion was more intense.
