1 Air at 1 atm and 25°C containing small quantities of iodine, flow with a velocity of 6.2 m/s inside 16 CO1 AP
a 35 mm diameter tube. Calculate mass transfer coefficient for iodine. The thermo physical
properties of air are  = 15.5 x 10-6 m2 / s, D=0.82x10-5 m2/s.

2 The molar weights of the two components A and B of a gas mixture are 24 and 28 respectively. 16 CO1 AP
The molecular weight of gas mixture is found to be 30. if the mass concentration of the mixture
is 1.2 kg/m3, determine the following, (i) Density of component A and B (ii) Molar fractions (iii)
Mass fractions (iv) Total pressure if the temperature of the mixture is 290K.

3 A mixture of O2 and N2 with their partial pressures in the ratio 0.21 to 0.79 is in a container at 16 CO1 AP
25°C. Calculate the molar concentration, the mass density, the mole fraction and the mass
fraction of each species for a total pressure of 1 bar. What would be the average molecular
weight of the mixture?

4 An open pan 20cm in diameter and 8 cm deep contains water at 25°C and is exposed to dry 16 CO1 AP
atmospheric air. If the rate of diffusion of water vapour is 8.54 x 10 -4 kg/h, estimate the diffusion
coefficient of water in air.

5 Dry air at 20°C (=1.2 kg/m3, =15 x 10-6 m2/s, D=4.2 x 10-5m2/s) flows over a flat plate of length 16 CO1 AP
50cm which is covered with a thin layer of water at a velocity of 1 m/s. Estimate the local mass
transfer coefficient at a distance of 10 cm from the leading edge and average mass transfer
coefficient.

6 Air at 10 °C with a velocity of 3 m/s flows over a flat plate. If the plate is 0.3 m long, calculate the 16 CO1 AP
mass transfer coefficient.

7 Air at 30°C and atmospheric pressure flows in a 12 mm diameter tube of 1 metre length with a 16 CO1 AP
velocity of 2.5 m/s. The inside surface of the tube contains a deposit of naphthalene. Determine
the average mass transfer coefficient. Take diffusion coefficient, Dab = 0.62 x 10-5 m2/s.

8 (i) Explain Reynold’s number, Sherwood number, Schmidt number. 16 CO1 U

(ii)Discuss about steady state Equimolar counter diffusion.

9 Air at 20°C and atmospheric pressure, containing small quantities of iodine flows with a velocity 16 CO1 AP
of 4 m/s inside a 4 cm inner diameter tube. Determine the mass transfer coefficient. Assume D ab
= 0.75x 10 m /s.

10 CO2 and air experience Equimolar counter diffusion in a circular tube whose length and diameter 16 CO1 AP
are 1.2 m and 60 mm respectively. The system is at a total pressure of 1 atm and a temperature
of 273 K. The ends of the tube are connected to large chambers. Partial pressure of CO 2 at one
end is 200 mm of Hg while at the other end is 90 mm of Hg. Calculate the following
