Equations

1. Consider the temperature distribution function 𝑇(𝑥, 𝑦) = 2 − 𝑥 2 − 𝑦 2 on a thin metallic

plate that extends over 0 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 1, 0 ≤ 𝑦 ≤ 1 in 𝑥𝑦 −plane. Plot graphically the isotherms
7
(level curves) described by 𝑇(𝑥, 𝑦) = 𝑐 for 𝑐 = 4 and 𝑐 = 1 respectively.

2. Determine the gradient vector (∇𝑇)𝑃 at the point 𝑃(1,1) on the plate for the temperature
distribution function 𝑇(𝑥, 𝑦) defined in Problem 1. Represent the vector (∇𝑇)𝑃
graphically, clearly highlighting the angles it makes with the plotted isotherms.

3. The temperature 𝑇: ℝ3 − {(0,0,0)} ⟶ ℝ at any point 𝑃(𝑥, 𝑦, 𝑧) is inversely proportional

to the square of the distance of 𝑃 from the origin. If the value of the temperature 𝑇 at the
point 𝑄(0,0,1) is √3 then find the rate of change of 𝑇 at the point 𝑃(1,1,2) in the direction

of 𝑃𝑄

4. The velocity field of a two-dimensional flow is given by ⃗⃗⃗

𝑉 = (𝑥 2 𝑦 + 𝑦 2 )𝑖̂ − 𝑥𝑦 2 𝑗̂. Prove
that the flow is incompressible and rotational.

5. Let 𝒞 be the curve of intersection of the cylinder 𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 = 4 and the 𝑥𝑦 −plane and the
orientation of 𝒞 is in counterclockwise direction. Find the value of 𝛼 if

|∮(sin 𝑥 + 𝑒 𝑥 )𝑑𝑥 + 4𝑥 𝑑𝑦 + 𝑒 𝑧 cos 2 𝑧 𝑑𝑧| = 𝛼𝜋

6. Suppose 𝜇(𝑥) is an integrating factor of the differential equation:

𝑀(𝑥, 𝑦)𝑑𝑥 + 𝑁(𝑥, 𝑦)𝑑𝑦 = 0.
Prove that

𝜕𝑦 𝜕𝑥
𝜇(𝑥) = exp (∫ 𝑑𝑥)

7. Show that the differential equation + (𝑦 − ) 𝑑𝑦 = 0; 𝑦 ≠ 0 is exact and
√𝑦 2 +𝑥 2 𝑦√𝑦 2 +𝑥 2

hence find its solution. Also, verify that the obtained solution satisfies the given differential
equation.

8. Let 𝑦(𝑥) be the solution of the ordinary differential equation:

𝑑2 𝑦 𝑑𝑦
+ 2 𝑑𝑥 + 𝐵𝑦 = 0.
𝑑𝑥 2

Find lim 𝑦(𝑥) for the following choices of constant 𝐵.

𝑥→∞

(a) 0 < 𝐵 < 1

(b) 𝐵 > 1

9. Consider the second order ODE:

𝑑2 𝑦 𝑑𝑦
+ 𝐴 𝑑𝑥 + 𝐵𝑦 = 0. (𝐴 > 0, 𝐵 > 0)
𝑑𝑥 2

Find the condition for which the given ODE always admits two linearly independent
solutions that are products of exponential and trigonometric functions.

10. Find the Wronskian determinant for the functions 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 2 and 𝑔(𝑥) = 𝑥|𝑥|.
a) Are these functions linearly independent for all 𝑥 ∈ ℝ ?
b) Plot the graphs of 𝑓(𝑥) and 𝑔(𝑥) to verify your answer in part (a).

11. In a culture of yeast, the amount 𝒜 of active yeast grows at a rate proportional to the
amount currently present in it. If the original amount 𝒜0 doubles in 2 hours, how long
does it take for the original amount to triple?

12. Consider a population growth model which is described by the differential equation
𝑑𝑃(𝑡)
= 𝑎𝑃(𝑡) − 𝑏𝑃2 (𝑡), 𝑃(0) = 𝑃0 ; 𝑎 > 0, 𝑏 > 0
𝑑𝑡
where 𝑃(𝑡) is the population at time 𝑡. Determine 𝑃(𝑡) and the
population as 𝑡 ⟶ ∞.
