Machine Design FM3200 – Assignment 3 Problems

Problem 1
A simple connecting rod (n=2) of circular cross section is 150 mm long and is to carry a load of 22 kN.
Determine the diameter using mild steel 𝑆𝑌 = 240 MPa and a factor of safety of 2.

Answer: 15.45 mm

Problem 2
What is the allowable compressive load for a 50-mm x 100-mm steel bar that is 2m long? Assume 𝑆𝑦 =
275 MPa, n = 1, and 𝑓𝑠 = 4.

Answer: 134.9 kN

Problem 3

The plates in Fig. 6-25 are both ¼ -inch thick and

joined by 3/16-inch fillet welds 6 in long, one on each
side. Find the maximum, steady load P that the joint
will withstand. The material has a strength level of
70,000 psi.
Answer: 33360 lb

Problem 4

The figure on the right shows the support base for an

antenna guy-wire. What should be the length L of
the 1/4-in. weld if the maximum, steady, tensile load
P is 40,000 lb? Assume a strength level of the
material of 60000 psi.
Answer = 6.29 in
Problem 5

A clevis (shackle) attachment for a pneumatic

cylinder is to be attached to the actuating rod by
a full-circumference fillet- weld (E.ig. 6-27). For a
steady tensile load of 7000 lb, what weld size is
required?
Answer = 3/16 in
Problem 6

A lap joint of the type shown in the figure on

the right has plates 0.5 in. thick , 16 in. wide,
and a tensile load P. If the strength level is 70
ksi , what size load can be carried for (a) steady
conditions, and (b) dynamic conditions?
Answers
a) 118.7 kips b) 79.1 kips
