Course - Advance Power Electronics and Control

Instructor- Dr. Avik Bhattacharya
Assignment-3, Week-3
1. Semi-converters are
a. single quadrant converters
b. double quadrant converters
c. three quadrant converters
d. none of the mentioned

Explanation - Semi-converters are single quadrant converters, because the

voltage and current can only be both positive due to the diodes connected.

2. A three-phase, fully controlled thyristor converter is used as line commutated inverter

to feed 50 kW power 420 V dc to a three-phase, 415 V(line), 50 Hz ac mains.
Consider dc link current to be a constant. The rms current of the thyristor is
a. 119.04 A
b. 37 A
c. 68.73 A
d. 39.68 A
Explanation –

3. A three-phase bridge rectifier is supplied from a Y-connected 208-V 60-Hz supply. The average
load current is 60 A and has negligible ripple. Calculate the percentage reduction of output
voltage due to commutation if the line inductance per phase is 0.5 mH.
a. 1.25
b. 3.85
c. 5.85
d. 9.85

Explanation - voltage reduction Vx= 6*f*Ls*Idc for 3-phase source inductance converter.
4. For a single-phase dual converter, with converters C1 and C2 connected in anti-
parallel, which relation among the following is true to keep the average voltages from
C1 and C2 equal? C1 and C2 have firing angles α1 and α2 respectively.

a. α1 = α2
b. α1 + α2 = 360°
c. α1 + α2 = 180°
d. none of the mentioned
Explanation - By maintaining α1 + α2 = 180°, one converter can operate as converter
and another as an inverter hence, the average output voltages are equal . This can be
proved as follows
Vom cos α1 = Vom cos α2
Vom = 2Vm/π . . (Vm for both the converters is same)
cos α1 = cos α2
cos α1 = cos (180 – α2)
α1 + α2 = 180°.

5. A single-phase, full-bridge, fully controlled thyristor rectifier feeds a load comprising a 10

Ω resistance in series with a very large inductance. The rectifier is fed from an ideal 230
V, 50 Hz sinusoidal source through cables which have negligible internal resistance and a
total inductance of 2.28 mH. If the thyristors are triggered at an angle α = 45°, the
commutation overlap angle in degree (rounded off to 2 decimal places) is_____.
a. 4.80
b. 6.70
c. 8.90
d. 10.60
Explanation –
6. A single-phase, full-bridge diode rectifier fed from a 230 V, 50 Hz sinusoidal source
supplies a series combination of finite resistance. R, and a very large inductance, L, The
two most dominant frequency components in the source current are:
a. 150 Hz, 250 Hz
b. 50 Hz, 150 Hz
c. 50 Hz, 100 Hz
d. 50 Hz, 0 Hz
Explanation -

7. A fully controlled three phase bridge converter is working from a 415 V, 50 Hz AC

supply. It is supplying constant current of 100 A at 400 V to a DC load. Assume large
inductive smoothing and neglect overlap. The rms value of the AC line current in
amperes is
a. 81.65
b. 41.25
c. 66.45
d. 69.85
Explanation -

8. A 3-phase bridge rectifier, has the average output voltage as 286.48 V. Find the
maximum value of line voltage

a. 100 V
b. 200 V
c. 300 V
d. 400 V
Explanation - Explanation: Vo = 3Vml/π
Vml = (π x Vo)/3 = 300 V.

9. Which of the following statements is true regarding the harmonics produced by a multi-
pulse converter?
a. Multi-pulse converters do not produce harmonics.
b. Multi-pulse converters produce harmonics that are harmonically rich.
c. Multi-pulse converters produce harmonics at specific orders that can be
minimized.
d. The number of harmonics produced increases with the number of pulses.
10. In a 3-phase semi-converter, for firing angle less than 60° the freewheeling diode
conducts for
a. 30°
b. 60°
c. 120°
d. 0

Explanation - In case of a semi-converter operating with α < 60°, FD does not comes into
play, as the voltage never falls to zero and gives no chance for the inductor to discharge.
