FIRST GENERATION OF COMPUTERS:
A vacuum-tube computer, now termed a first
generation computer, is a computer that uses
vacuum tubes for logic circuits. Although
superseded by second- generation
transisterized computers, vacuum-tube
computers continued to be built in the 1960s
The first digital computer was named ENIAC. They
called it a Vacuum Tube computer, because it used
vacuum tubes for the active switching elements,
not transistors ( they had not yet been invented).
The IBM-650 was the most popular first generation
computer. It was small enough that medium size
businesses and schools, or individual departments
of large institutions could afford one.
THE MAIN CHARACTERISTICS OF FIRST GENERATION
COMPUTERS ( 1940s- 1950s)
Main electronic component- vacuum tube
Main memory- magnetic drums and magnetic
tapes
Programming language- Machine Language
Power- consume a lot of electricity and generate
a lot of heat .
WHO INVENTED THE FIRST GENERATION OF COMPUTERS?
1946-1959 is the period of first generation
computer. J.P.Eckert and J.W. Mauchy
invented the first successful electronic
computer called ENIAC.
ENIAC stands for ‘ Electronic Numeric
Integrated And Calculator.’
WHO CREATED THE FIRST COMPUTER AND WHAT DID IT
DO?
The first computer was invented by Charles
Babbage (1822) but was not built until 1991!
Alan Turning invented computer Science. The
ENIAC (1945) was the first electronic general
purpose digital computer; it filled a room
Examples of first generation
computers:
ENIAC
EDVAC
UNIVAC
IBM-701
IBM-650
WHAT WAS THE FIRST GENERATION OF COMPUTERS USED
FOR?
The Antikythera mechanism is believed to be the earliest
known mechanical analog computer, according to Derek J. de
Solla Price. It was designed to calculate astronomical
positions.
First generation computers were mainly used to perform
arithmetic calculations with the use of exploiting vacuum
tubes. These calculations include calculating astronomical
positions, as well as serving purposes in the military, such as
calculating missile trajectories or cracking enemy codes.
WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF THE FIRST GENERATION
COMPUER?
They were completely scientific. Due to the use of
machine language in the first generation
computers, they were reletively faster. The first
generation computers were used in calculations
related to he development of atomic bombs.
WHAT ARE THE DISADVANTAGES OF THE FIRST
GENERATION COMPUER?
They consumed high amounts of energy/ electricity
They were not portable because of their weight and
size
they were slow due to their use of inefficient vacuum
tube technology
First generation computers were heavy, weighing
around 30 tons, and large in size
WHY DID THE FIRST GENERATION COMPUTERS
FAIL?
The first generation of Computers were dependent upon the
lowest-level programming language known as a machine
language, which is understandable only by the computer.
They were not able to perform multitasking work and were
capable of solving only one problem at a time.
First generation computers consumed high amounts of
energy or electricity and were slow due to their use of
inefficient vaccum tube technology.
WHY WERE VACUUM TUBES USED?
The vacuum tube was the leading electronic component used in
first-generation computers.
Vacuum tubes were used for circuitry components and magnetic
drums.
Vacuum tubes could be easily replaced, work at high
temperatures without damage, and produce superior sound
quality.
When the Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer (ENIAC)
utilised 18,000 vacuum tubes to function, they allowed signals
to be sent and calculations to be performed quickly.
Technology
of the Future
What technology is used in the sixth generations
of computers?
Sixth generation computers are also known as
intelligent computers based on artificial intelligence.
In the sixth generation of computers semiconductors
are used as raw materials in processors.
As A.I (Artificial Intelligence) develops, most of us still
consider ourselves in the fifth generarion of computers.
THE SIXTH GENERATION OF COMPUTERS
What is the 6th generation of computer
language?
In computer programming a 6th generation
programming language is (6GPL) and it is a
very high-level programming language with
extreme abstraction from the hardware.
The characteristics of 6th generation
computers are:
1. Parallel and distributed computing.
2. Computers have became smarter, faster and
smaller.
3. Development of robotics.
4. Natural language processing.
5. Development of voice recognition software.
THAT IS THE END OF OUR
PRESENTATION.
